Sudden Death
This morning about 10:30 o'clock, Isaac Beard, foreman, aged about 65 years, while employed sinking scrap at Light's rolling mill, suddenly fell over and in a few moments expired. Mr. Bears had been in the enjoyment of his usual health when he went to work, and his sudden death created quite an excitement at the mill. Several of the workmen who saw him fall to the earth went to his aid, and while engaged carrying him to a bench, he breathed his last. The coroner arrived soon upon the ground, but the children of the deceased refused to have them hold an inquest over the remains, feeling positive that the old gentleman had died a natural death. The deceased had been working at the Agricultural Works for some time, and only this morning commenced work at the rolling mill, remarking to some of the men that he was getting young again and that he was able to work with ease at this trade, little dreaming that in a few hours he would be among the dead. He died from effects of heart disease.

February 20, 1837
We learn from the Lebanon (Pa.) Courier of the 15th inst. that the dwelling house of Mr. William Gordon, of Annville township, in that county, was destroyed by fire on the previous Thursday and that three of his children perished in the flames! - namely, a girl aged 9, and two boys of 6 and 4 years old. It appears that the father was absent at the time, at work for a neighbor, and that the mother was engaged in cleaning flax, some distance from the house. The fire caught by means of a parcel of flax which was spread about the stove in the house, and so rapid was its progress, that the eldest daughter, a girl of sixteen had barely enough time to rescue, from the sleeping room, an infant in the cradle, leaving the other children to their fate.

Haulman was blown high into the air, landed on the porch roof of Gruber's place, slipped off and dropped into the well. Young Haulman and Matterness were hurled aside and badly burned.

Lebanon Pa., March 7 - Mrs. Amanda Woomer, seventy-five years old, died at her home at Myerstown from the effects of a ruptured blood vessel received while shoveling snow at her home. Mrs. Woomer insisted upon living alone and doing her own work. Her only companion for several years was a small dog. Just before the Civil War she married John Ritzshaw, and when he enlisted she refused to leave him and accompanied him on several battlefields, where she is accredited with deeds of heroism and mercy. Her husband was killed in battle and upon her return home she married Orlando Woomer, who died three years ago. Mrs. Woomer alledged that he treated her so badly that she ordered her own grave dug a year ago to make sure that a brick wall would separate her body from his. Her will also provides that none of her estate, valued at several thousand dollars, shall go to any church, but to several orphanages.
