Shocking Accident
On Friday last, as the eastern mail stage was descending the mountain east of Stoystown, the axletree broke, and as the road was covered with ice, it could not be prevented from upsetting. William, a fine promising son of Major George Graham, of that place, about 14 years of age, sat with the driver in front, and whilst the stage was going over, leaped from his seat, when the stage fell upon him, which fractured his skull so severely that he died instantaneously. Four other passengers were in the stage at the time, who remained unhurt. We had hoped, that accidents enough had occurred by persons jumping from carriages while going fast, to teach others how to act in cases of this kind. The present melancholy occurrence adds one to the many other admonitions to be careful. - Gaz.
