HILLSIDE CEMETERY
CEMETERY NO. 33

The Hillside Cemetery is on the Main Road from Stone Bridge to Seaconnet Point, about five miles south of Stone
Bridge, and about one quarter mile north of Tiverton Four Corners near the Amicable Congregational Church.
About two acres of land were purchased of Job and Lydia A. Wordell, 13 Oct. 1871 and the same incorporated in
the Rhode Island General Assembly in the January 1872 session. On 2 July 1918 three acres more were purchased
from Christina C. Whitcomb. This joined the original cemetery on the west.
On 9 Feb. 1870, Gideon H. Durfee writes in his diary that "Sarah A. wife of Deacon Gideon Almy was buried
in the New cemetery." This antedates for incorporation by over a year but the fact that Peleg Almy and Gideon
H. Durfee were relatives of Sarah A. Almy and also associates and first Trustees of the Hillside Cemetery Association
may account for the privilege of burial before the signing of the deed on 13 Oct. 1871. There are many tombstones
in the cemetery dated before 1870, but it is known that they were brought from neighboring farms.
