Joseph W. Taylor Suicides

The remains of Joseph W. TAYLOR, who committed suicide in New York, Sunday, arrived in this city this morning and were turned over to Undertaker Berry for preparation for burial.  Taylor was formerly a resident of this city and his mother now resides on Garden street.  He has been twice married and his second wife is now living.  He was a member of the G. A. R. and of the (---) Masons.

John Watson, of this city, a relative of Mr. Taylor, was the first to receive word of his death and indeed he had reason to expect it for Taylor wrote him a while ago and stated that he intended to make way with himself.  Taylor was 56 years o age.  He was employed at the mill of the Dexter Yarn Company when the Civil War broke out and enlisted in the regiment commanded by Col. Stephen Rocklin.  Since the war he has been in the woolen business and has been travelling salesman for several concerns.  Of late he has been out of employment and has become despondent, the real cause of his suicide.

When Mr. Watson learned that he intended to kill himself be telegraphed to him at New York and in reply got word from the boarding mistress where Taylor stopped that the deed was done.  He telegraphed again and instructed that the body be sent here.

The funeral services will be held from Undertaker Berry’s rooms, Walcolt street, to-morrow morning.  It is understood that the suicide was effected by means of gas, which was turned on in the room where Taylor slept.  [Pawtucket Times, Jan 4, 1898, Submitted by Karen Seeman]
