Allendale's Christmas

Nothing to Disburb Customary Quite - Marriage of a Popular Couple

December 30, 1897, The State (Paper)

Allendale, Dec. 29.--So far the Christmas season has passed off quitely and without accident in our community. Part of the quiet of Christmas day may be attributed to the weather--there was so much rain in town that our small boys were unable to utilize their supply of firecrackers and Roman candles.

Many of our college boys and girls are at home for the holidays, among them John All, Percy All and Hugh Tison of Clemson, and Miss Ethel Googe of the Columbia Female college, also Willie Breeland of the Charleston Medical college.

The pupils of our graded school are enjoying the holidays, Prof. J. C. Daniel, the principal, is visiting relatives in Laurens; Miss Mollie Farmer, one of the assistants is visiting in Newberry: the others are spending time with friends at home. Miss Laura Darlington, our music and art teacher, speaks of going to New York to take a special course.

"The Allendale Pen and Press" has made its graceful bow to the public. Miss Corinne Searson, the accomplished daughter of Dr. Searson, is the editor and her father is business manager. We bespeak for it great prosperity.

The social event of the season was the marriage of Mr. Waring Lawton of Savannah, Ga., to Miss Madge Wood, one of our fair daughters. It occurred on the 23rd at the Baptist church, Rev. J. T. Morrison of Robertville officiating. Miss Telie Wood was maid of honor. The attendants were as follows: Miss Sallie Tobin with Mr. T. M. Willingham, Miss Pauline Tison with Mr. Ferris Cain, Miss Jennie Bostick with Mr. Bryan Harper, Miss Louise WIlson with Mr. T. J. Wood, Miss Fetie Wood with Mr. Maner Lawton. The flower girls and escorts were: Miss Agnes Tobin with Master Malcolm Hay, Miss Bessie Tison with Master Walter Smart. Ushers: Messrs. B. F. Wilson, J. G. Stoney, I. D. Ellis and J. E. Searson.

Much interest is being taken in our municipal election, to take place in a short time.
