Roy Thomason
Mr. Roy H. Thomason, 86, of Dalewood Drive, husband of Gladys Monroe Thomason, died Sunday, August 8, 2004 at Hillcrest Hospital. Born in Greenville, he was a son of the late John W. and Sallie Turner Thomason. Mr. Thomason wa a member and deacon emertus of Simpsonville First Baptist Church, a Gideon, a member of the Greenville Lions Club since 1966 and a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran having served with the 8th Air Force Signal Group during WWII. He was also an Electrolux salesman for more than sixty-five years and holds the company record for life-long sales.

Surviving in addition to his wife are one son, Rev. Dr. Jim Thomason and his wife, Pam of Anderson; one daughter, Jean Thomason Wilder and her husband, Sam of Simpsonville; one sister, mary Ruth Thomason Jung and her husband, George of Marion, IN; five grandchildren, Claire Thomason, David Thomason, Katie Thomason, Carson Wilder and Christine Wilder; and numberous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 10, 2004 at Simpsonville First Baptist Church with Rev. Randy Harling and Rev. Glenn Bolt officiating. Burial will be at Cannon Memorial Park in Fountain Inn. The family will receive friends from 1:45 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. Tuesday, August 9, 2004 at the Church. In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorials be made to Simpsonville First Baptist Church Mission Fund, 106 Church Street, Simpsonville, SC 29681. Marvin E. Thomason
Marvin E. Thomason, age 76, of 114 Lake Breeze Spur Road, died Tuesday, April 29, 2003, at Laurens County Hospital. He was born in Spartanburg and was the son of the late Clarence and Sue Mae Carman Thomason. He was retired from Drayton Mills in Spartanburg, was a past member of the evening Optimist Club and Cross Hill First Baptist Church, and was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. Surviving are his wife, Jean Tate Thomason, of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Michael M. Thomason, and Elevera, of Simpsonville; a grandson, Michael Savage, of Myrtle Beach; a granddaughter, Sara Thomason, of Simpsonville; and two sisters, Margaret Cantrell and Lois Parham, both of Spartanburg. Graveside services will be conducted Thursday, May 1, at 1p.m. at Greenlawn Memorial Garden in Spartanburg. The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Gray Funeral Home. Jesse S. McGee
Greenville, Jan. 22 - Greenville is saddened at the death of Jesse S. McGee, 82 years old, which occurred Thursday. Mr. McGee was one of the oldest and best known citizens of this section. The funeral will be held Saturday. He is survived by the following children. W. E. McGee of Columbia, C. H. McGee of Fanbury, Neb., Miss Etta McGee of Greenville, Miss Eliza McGee of Lake Forest, Ill., Mrs. A. H. Wells and Mrs. J. C. McCull of Greenville. Mr. McGee was a Confederate veteran, having served in an Abbeville company under Col. Aiken. He was twice wounded. (The State January 23, 1915)

John McLean, 72, COLLEGE ADMINISTRATOR
GREENVILLE -- Memorial services for John Lacy McLean, 72, of 8 Tranquil Ave. will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Fourth Presbyterian Church. Mackey Mortuary is in charge. Memorials may be made to the church. Mr. McLean died Sunday, May 29, 1994. Born in Maxton, N.C., he was a son of the late John Lacy and Emma Cothran Thomson McLean. He was graduated from Davidson College and received his master's degree from Colgate University, a doctorate in literature from Coker College and a doctorate in laws from Davidson and Newberry colleges. He was a former administrator of Davidson and Goucher colleges and Colgate University. He was founder and executive director and president of the Foundation of Independent Colleges, was a former trustee of Stillman College and a former director of Independent College Funds of America. He was an Army veteran of World War II, where he served as a captain. He was past president of the Greenville Rotary Club and a member of the St. Andrews Society, Poinsett Club and a member of Fourth Presbyterian Church. He was a former contributing editor to the Presbyterian publication "Outlook" and a member of the board of directors of the Presbyterian "Survey." He was a consultant to the Thornwell Home. Surviving are his wife, Virginia Mason McLean; sons, Dr. John McLean Jr. of Morehead, Ky., and William Mclean of Atlanta; a daughter, Mary Tyner of Atlanta; stepsons, Dr. Charles Jr., Mason, Joseph and Rev. Richard Thomas, all of Greenville; a stepdaughter, Dr. Nancy Tippins of Alexandria, Va.; three grandchildren; and seven stepgrandchildren. (The State) - May 30, 1994)
Joseph A. Bates
Greenville, April 16 - Twenty-three hours after his mother, Mrs. Mary E. Bates, had died in his home, Joseph A. Bates, age 59, and a prominent citizen of the community, suffered a fatal stroke of apoplexy yesterday afternoon. A double funeral attended by a large number, was held this afternoon. Nancy McClanahan
September 23d, in Greenville District, Mrs. Nancy McClanahan, widow of Capt. John McClanahan, in the 74th year of her age. The deceased was on a visit to her son, Mr. Samuel G. McClanahan, at the time of her dieath, and died at his house. She imigrated with her husband and younger children to the State of Missouri about 27 years ago. Mrs. McClanahan was extensively known and respected in this section of South Carolina, where still remain some of her old friends and kindred. She was the daughter of the Honl Elias Earle, who represented the District of Pendleton and Greenville many years in Congress. Her mother's maiden name was Frances Milton Robinson. Her father emigrated from Virginia and settled in Greenville District when she was an infant. Six children survive her, and a large number of grandchildren and great grandchildren. Margaret F. Bramlett
Greenville - Margaret Frances Tow Bramlett, 81, of 7 Edgewater Lane, widow of William Furman Bramlett, died Feb. 2, 2002, at her residence. A native of Salem, S.C., a daughter of Robert and Ada Smith Tow, she was a retired employee of J. P. Stevens, Beatty Plant, and a member of Piedmont Park Baptist Church. Surviving are two sons, Larry R. Smith of Greenville and William E. Bramlett of Greer; one daughter, Karen B. Covington of Mauldin; eight grandchildren, Terri Cox, Vicki Smith, Tony Harvey, Margie Smith, Nicole Adams, Jennifer Woodward, Bridget Covington and Jay Covington; 14 great-grandchildren; a special friend, Mac Smith. Mrs. Bramlett was predeceased by one son, Jerry David Bramlett. Visitation will be held 7 to 9 tonight at The Wood Mortuary. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at The Wood Mortuary conducted by the Rev. Don Elders. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. Mary Hazel Hipp
Greer - Mary Hazel Bridwell Hipp, 81, of 500 Harvey Road, wife of the late W. R. Hipp, died Feb. 2, 2002, at Greenville Memorial Medical Center. A native of Spartanburg County, she was the daughter of the late Lawrence and Rene Burnett Bridwell, a retired employee of Victor Mill and a member of 2nd Baptist Church. Surviving are one son, Curtis Hipp Sr. of Greer; one daughter, Jean Parham of Greer; one sister, Nora Lee Powell of Duncan; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Hipp was predceased by three daughters, Louise Jackson, Ruby Thompson, Angie Hipp, and one son, William Hipp, and two brothers, Clyde Bridwell and Joseph Bridwell.

Funeral services will be held 4 p.m. Tuesday at The Wood Mortuary conducted by the Rev. Hall Hollifield. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Mike Harris and the grandson, Tim Parham, Curt Hipp Jr., Mitchell Parham, Jacob Gambrel, Sammy Joines Jr., Justin Joines, and Dyhlan Gambrell. Honorary Escort will be Kevin Gambrell, Charles Powell, Bob Powell, Jerry Jackson, Clyde Edward Bridwell and Jimmy Steadman. Visitation will be held 7 to 9 tonight at The Wood Mortuary. The family is at the home of the daughter, Jean Parham, 167 Lamira Ave., Greer.


John Hammett
We learn from a gentleman who was one of the Jury of Inquest that John Hammett, Esq., who resided 10 or 12 miles from this place (town of Greenville), in the eastern part of the District, was accidentally killed on the evening of the 29th ult. (October 29, 1834). Mr. Hammett had been in the habit of attending his mill for some time, and is supposed to have attempted to pass a small opening in the floor, just before sunset, over which a plank was loosely thrown, when the plank slipped off and precipitated his fall upon the rocks below, a distance of several feet, which most likely caused his instant death. He was not found until the next morning, his family having supposed he had gone to visit a neighbor. Mr. Hammett was about 73 years old, and had long been a highly respectable citizen of this District. William Deweese
Died, October 30th, at his residence, In Mecklenburg County, N.C., Mr. Wm. Deweese, in the 62d year of his age.  The deceased was a native of Greenville District, S.C., and was the son of Rev. Jonathan and Elizabeth Deweese. (The Charleston Mercury - December 13, 1859)

Mrs. Sallie Cox
Mrs. Sallie Cox, mother of M. L. Cox, died at the hosue of the latter person on Friday morning last (Feb 6, 1891), after an illness of about a week, from bronchitis.  The deceased was age sixty-five or seventy years.  She was the widow of James Cox and sister of Rev. James Lenderman and leaves four children; viz; Samuel Cox of Pickens and W. H. Cox, James Cox and M. L. Cox.  She was a good and upright woman and leaves many friends to mourn her death.  Her remains were buried at the family burial ground, on last Saturday. John Goodlett (abstract of obituary)
Died, at his late residence in the upper part of this District, on the 13th inst. Nancy Ford Goodlett (abstract of obituary)
Departed this life on the 2d inst. (April 2, 1837), Mrs. Nancy Goodlett, in the 91st year of her age.  During the War of the Revlution Mrs. Goodlett was the wife of John Ford, a Revolutionary patroit, after whose death she married Mr. John Goodlett, who has follwed ehr to the grave at an interval of a few days.  The deceased spent a long, useful, and pious life, having been an exemplary member of the Baptist church from the time the first church of that denomination was established on the forks of the Saluda.........(Upper South Carolina Genealogy & History, August 2003, Vol. XVII, No. 3, source:Greenville Mountaineer - April 26, 1837)

Faye Cooper
GREENVILLE - Services for Faye D. Cooper, 76, of 102 Lakeside Court, will be held at 5 p.m. Monday at Holly Ridge Baptist Church officiated by Rev. J.T. Cromer and Rev. Bryan Hester, with burial following in Cannon Memorial Park directed by Cannon Funeral Home-Jones Chapel, Simpsonville. Visitation will be 6-8 this evening at the funeral home chapel. Memorials may be made to Holly Ridge Baptist Church Building Fund, 260 Adams Mill Road, Simpsonville, SC 29681.

Mrs. Cooper, widow of Billie R. Cooper, died Friday, August 18, 2000, at her residence. Born in Newberry, she was a daughter of the late Walter Hyatt and Myra Sligh Davis. She taught school in Great Falls, Duncan, West Columbia, and retired from Greenville County Schools. She also taught kindergarten at Simpsonville First Baptist Church. She was a charter member of Holly Ridge Baptist Church where she organized the preschool department.

Surviving are her daughter, Sarah Marie Cooper of Taylors; sisters, Nell Bohannon of Xenia, Ohio, Myra Davis Phillips of Spartanburg; brother, James Henry Davis of Newberry. She was predeceased by a sister, Macie Davis King; brothers, Heyward Davis and John M. Davis. Thomas TOWNES, Revolutionary War Veteran

Another Revolutioner Gone

Departed this life at the residence of Capt. John TOWNES, in Polk County, Tenn., on Sunday the 28th day of April, 1844, at the advanced age of ninety-three years, Thomas TOWNES, a native of Amelia county, Virginia. The deceased was a soldier of the Revolution, was stationed during the war at Portsmouth, Hampton, Norfolk and Williamsburg; was in the battles of Guilford Court House, Stone Bridge, and Guinn's Island, and had the pleasure of seeing Lord CORNWALLIS surrender his sword at Yorktown; he afterwards emigrated to Greenville District, South Carolina, where he resided until the year 1835, when he moved to Tennessee in company with his son. He had been a member of the Baptist Church for many years, and continued to live as such until the day of his death, being the last of six brothers, who were all soldiers of the Revolution! Mahalla Cooper
Miss Mahalla Cooper, daughter of the late Jack Cooper died yesterday at her home in the Gantt Township, near Salem Church, after a long illness from a cancer.  She was sixty years old.  Two sisters, who were living with her and a
brother in Texas survive her.  Miss Cooper was well known in the city and in her section of the county. She was a member of Bethesda Methodist Church and will be buried in the family graveyard. (Greenville News - Friday, January 25, 1901, contributed by Lowry Wilson)
Miss Elizabeth Cooper
Daughter of the Late Jack Cooper dies at her home near Dunham's BridgeMiss Elizabeth Cooper, daughter of the late Jack Cooper died at the family home near Dunham's Bridge on Monday Night, at an advanced age.Miss Cooper was well known in the city.  For years she was a regular visitor here with the product of her farm, which she sold.One sister, Miss Mary Cooper and several nephews and nieces are her surviving relatives.  The funeral services were held at the residence yesterday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. J. P. Attaway, pastor of Salem Church, of which the deceased was a member for many years.The interment was in the family graveyard. Miss Mary Cooper dies after short Illness
Miss Mary Cooper, 75 years of age, died at her home in the Welcome Church section, about 5 miles from Greenville on Friday morning at an early hour, after a short illness. Miss Cooper was one of the oldest residents of this section and a daughter of the late Jack Cooper, who was prominent in that section. Funeral services were conducted Friday afternoon at 4 o'clock from the home. Interment is in the family cemetery, Cooper's Graveyard. John E. Parnell
Greer, John Eley Parnell, 69, of 26 Becky Gibson Road, Greer, S.C., died Thursday, September 21, 2006.  He was born in Wauchula, Florida. He was the son of the late Calip M. Parnell and Nina Collier Whidden.

He was a decorated Vietnam veteran and retired GY. SGT. USMC, a Boy Scout leader for 14 years, and a member of Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church. He traveled far and wide, and chose Greer as his home. Most important, he was a loving husband, father, and grandfather.

He is survived by his wife, C. Linda Parnell of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia and Chris McLoughlin; a granddaughter, Samantha Parnell and her fiance, Matt Lewis; two brothers, Mearl Parnell of Wauchula, Florida and Wendel Parnell of Largo, Florida; and a sister, Pam Mitchell of Sebring, Florida.  He was predeceased by his son, John Wesley (Porky) Parnell.

Visitation will be Sunday, September 24, 2006, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at Wood Mortuary, Greer, S.C.

Services will be held Sunday, September 24, 2006, at 2 p.m. at Wood Mortuary, conducted by Rev. Don Bennett. Graveside services to follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, Greer, S.C., with full military honors.

Robert L. Baker
Simpsonville - Rev. Robert L. Baker, 78, of 5 Tahoe Drive, died on Tuesday, May 2, 2006 at his residence.  Born in Chester, SC, he was the son of the late Thomas Ervin and Ella Henrietta Rawlins Baker.

Rev. Baker pastored the following Church’s of God: Newberry, Simpsonville Liberty, Washington Avenue, Greenville, Orangeburg, Laurens Road in Greenville, and York. He was a member of Praise Cathedral Church of God.

Surviving are his wife of fifty-eight years, Ruby Shelton Baker, of the home; a son, Michael L. Baker and wife Sharon E., of Roanoke, VA; a granddaughter, Kysha Lyn Baker Winters and husband Byron E., of Cleveland, TN; and two sisters, Maggie Lou Stacks of Lancaster, SC and Jeanette Hughes of Asheville, NC.

Services will be held on Friday at 1:00 p.m. at Praise Cathedral Church of God with visitation from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Entombment will be at Graceland East Memorial Park.  Memorials may be made to South Carolina Senior Adult Choir Ministry, c/o Church of God State Offices, Hwy 417, Mauldin, SC 29662.

Died..February 8th, at his residence in Greenville District, Major Micajah Berry, in the 72d year of his age.  The deceased was one of the oldest residents of the District, and had been, for many years, one of her most prominent and honored citizens.  He was a native of the State of North Carolina.
