pg. 70 Franklin F. Gary, Cokesbury, S.C. born at Cokesbury, S.C., Nov. 9th 1829, is descended on his father's side from the Garys of Virginia, and on his mother's from the Witherspoons of Scotland. He received his educaiton at the Cokesbury high school, and studied medicine at the Jefferson med. coll., Philadelphia, from which he graduated in 1851, settling in his native town. He is a meber of the med. soc. of South carolina; and of the Abbeville co. med. soc., of which he was president in 1872. He has published a paper on the "Medical Topography of Abbeville County," and contributed to medical journals various articles and reports of cases. He has been intendant of the town of Cokesbury; and in the civil war was surgeon in the 1st reg. of State troops. He is a trustee of the Masonic femal coll., and also the Cokesbury conferance high school; a director of the greenville & Columbia railroad; and a member of the grad lodge and of the grad royal arch chapter of South Carolina. He was married in 1853 to Mary C. Blackburn, of Laurens co., S.C. |
