Negro Hanged At Hampton - Dan Robertson Pays Penalty for Murder - First Execution in Past Fifteen Years Hampton, April 23 - Dan Robertson, colored, was hanged here today for the murder of Eliza Hunter, colored, at the deport here last February. The rope was cut by Sheriff Lightswy at exactly 12?54 and in 23 minutes the man was pronounced dead by Dr.. C. A. Rush, county physician, the fall breaking his neck. While the negro was being led to the scaffold he seemed to be perfectly willing to die and did not show any fear or excitement at all. Grant, a colored preacher, offered a prayer in behalf of the negro's soul and Robertson seemed impressed with it. Two brothers of Robertson came up from Beaufort county this morning and were present at the jail at the time of the hanging and will take his body to their home in beaufort county. This is the first hanging in Hampton county since three negroes were hanged for the murder of Raymond Mears, abut 15 years ago. |
