Aveleigh Presbyterian Church

Aveleigh Presbyterian Church

1852-1907

Aveleigh Presbyterian Church is the second oldest church in Newberry County. It was founded in May 30, 1835 and first located at Hunt's Crossroads, now the intersection of Highways 34 and 76 Bypass. It began with 31 members with the Rev. Moses Waddell. Infants were not baptized after birth - it's customed (to this day) for parents to wait sometimes months after birth before their child was baptized. In 1852 the church was moved to the corner of Calhoun and Martin streets in Newberry. This building was destroyed in 1907 by fire (above).

Aveleigh is a strong leading church in the south Carolina Presbytery, having over 275 members and is the largest Presbyterian church in the county.
