Sister Eunice is not dead but liveth! Such a life as hers cannot be forgotten. Never did a daughter exhibit more untiring devotion to her parents than did she. She read her Bible night and morning, and prayed to her Father in heaven. Not long before she was taken ill she wrote to her mother that she was becoming a more devoted Christian than ever. Her parents were called to her side about ten days before her death, and saw her die in peace, singing "Nearer, My God, to Thee, Nearer to Thee." Her new made friends at Huntsville were much grieved at her death. Her remains were buried at Lindale, Texas. May the Lord comfort the bereaved.

Thomas T.
Cureton, Esq. late of Newberry district, S.C. departed this life at
his residence in Covington, Georgia, on the 18th of May last. He was born
in Laurens, S.C. on the 31st day of May, 1781, and from thence he removed to
Newberry district, where he continued to reside during the principal part of his
lifetime, until his recent removal to Covington, Geo. His youth was passed
at a period and in a section of countyr, in which a first rate education could
not be even approximated, much less attained; it was a part of his patrimony
among other privations, to be precluded, in common with many of his
cotemporaries, from the golden opportunity of reaping the harvest of literature,
which the incredible increase of information during the last twenty years, has
so rapidly ripened as to promise a rich rewrd for all the expenses, labours, and
dangers of the past.
With the scanty attainments of a common school
education, he embarked in life at an early age, supplied by his inductry, the
defects of his opportunities, and filled to overflowing, the mearsure of his
friends expectations. He was elected, while he was a very young man, an
officer in a volunteer rifle corps which he subsequently commanded, and to them
he gave the first pledge of his becoming an excellent officer and a useful
member of society, of which his futrue life has been such an honorable
redemption. Shortly afterwards he was, although the youngest officer of
his grade among the candidates, elected to the command of a battalion. His
perosn, manners, voice, and talents were by nature, such as admirably qualified
him to become a good officer, and he was one of the few instances of a militia
officer, who has received the affection and esteem of the officers and men
through the toils of discipline, and has distinguished himself in the discharge
of his duty on the ordinary occasions of military service in the time of
peace. Had it ever been his fortune to have commanded in the field of
battle, there can be no doubt but that his courage and capacity would have been
eminently displayed in the defence of his countyr, and she would have added his
name with pride, to her long list of heroes. In the year 1812, he was
elected sheriff of Newberry district, and during four years, the periodical term
of his office, he performed its duties with such promptness and fidelity that he
gave, what is frequently no easy taks to fulfil, universal satisfaction tot he
people, and particularly to those who were interested as parties and officers in
the business of his office.
This ministerial office perhaps of all
others, is the one in which it is most difficult and distressing for an
individual to correctly and humanely choose between duty and sympathy.
Major Cureton, if ever there was a man so framed as to blend in proper
proportions, the sometimes apparently opposite but really consistanet qualities
of justice and mercy, exhibited, in the execution of the duties of sheriff,
these two virtures with such precision and mildness that none could complain of
his ever having violated the one from the undue influence of the other; he was
never known to wantonly sacrifice the feelings of the unfortunate on the altar
of justice, or to shrink from obeying the mandates of the law from a morbid
sensibilty.
After the lapse of a short period from the expiration
of his office as sheriff, he was elected ordinary of Newberry district, and into
the discharge of its important duties he carried the assiduity, accuracy, and
incorruptible integrity that had characterized his administration of the former
office with which he had been favored. In the tedious calculations and
burdensome laborers of the office, interrupted with the importunties of
impatient applicants for the dispatch of their business, he was proverbilly
patient, persevering, and accommodating. While he presided in the court of
ordinary suitors were not subjected to the severities that too frequently,
perhaps unintentionally result from the postponement of cases in the higher
courts of other countries, nor were they worn out into injust asquiescence by
"the laws delary," not brow-beaten from their rights by "the insolence of
office": indeed such was the correctness of adjudications, and such the
satisfaction he gave in his administration of the office, that during the period
of more than seven years, there was not that number of appeals carried to the
court of common pleas from his decisions. His conduct and character of
office was a striking contrast of the poets picture of..(lengthly poem and
eulogy continue with no mention of family names or burial place).
