Colony Lutheran Church
Newberry County, South Carolina

Colony was organized in 1845 by Rev. William Berley. Originally in a parish with St. Paul's and St. Luke's, in 1902 it became part of Beth Eden Parish with Mayer Memorial and Beth Eden churches. In 1910 St. James took the place of Mayer Memorial in Beth Eden Parish, which continued in this form until 1958 when colony secured a full time pastor.

Members Mr. and Mrs. S. V. Shevlin were killed in a railroad crossing accident in 1951. Their generosity allowed the present (the third) church building to be erected. An Allen organ and chimes were installed in 1957-1958.

The following sons became ministers: H. A. McCullough, Sr.; his nephew, I. E. Long; J. B. Bedenbaugh; and Andrew David Eargle.

1845 - March, 1957

Colony Lutheran Church is located between Newberry and Prosperity on SC, County Road Koon Highway. In 1884 the building was erected during the pastorate of Rev. Dr. George W. Holland with Shockley Brothers as builders & Mr. Jefferson Quattlebaum as supervisor. Two doors were installed: one for men and one for women with the women sitting on one side of the church and the men on the other.

When Rev. W. D. Haltingwanger became pastor in September 1924 the building was remodeled to what you see above. He was pastor till November 1934.

A new building was erected then occupied in April of 1957.  The church supports a cemetery.
