Murder of Eugene Leavell - 1906

Developed that Mrs. Goodwin, Wife of the Slayer, was the only eye-witness
The State August 30, 1906 Coroner's inquest in Leavell Killing

Newberry, Aug. 29 - At the coroner's inquest held today inquiring into the killing of Eugene Leavell by B. W. Goodwin, it developed tht Mrs. Goodwin, wife of the slayer, was the only eye-witness to the tragedy. She testified she saw Leavell coming up the road in a buggy about 7 o'clock. She called to him to stop and went out where he was; asked him what he had said about her. Leavell said he thought it was a dirty trick for her to forge that petition. About that time Goodwin, who had been sitting on the porch, came out and said Leavell had no right to talke to his wife that way. Witness said that Leavell called him a damn scoundrel, saying he was the cause of the fuss at the same time striking him with the buggy whip, getting out of the buggy as he did so. Goodwin shot, the bullet going through Leavell's left side. Leavell then started to get back in the buggy and fell, his horse walking off. Witness said she and her husban then went back in the house, leaving the man dying there.

Further testimony of ohther witnesses says that Leavell had been at Mr. Morris' and Brooks' that evening, stopping out of the rai, and that he was on his way home when accosted by Mrs. Goodwin.

The affair grew out of a school matter in the election of a teacher. It is alleged tht Mrs. Goodwin had gotten up a petition, forging some names to induce a teacher elected not to accept the school. Leavell was in favor of the teacher, and prominent in getting her elected. This was not brought out in the testimony, however.

When Coroner Lindsley reached the scene this forenoon, about 11:30 the body was still lying in the road. Solicitor cooper was at the inquest. Mrs. Goodwin testified that her husband was not in the habit of carrying a pistol.
