Albert J. Gibson
Newberry - Albert J. Gibson, one of the most highly respected citizens of Newberry, died suddenly early Sunday morning. Mr. Gibson had appeared to be in his usual health. On Saturday night he was at the chamber of commerce with some friends until 10 o'clock. After going home he drank a glass of milk, and shortly afterwards told his daughter, Mrs. O. B. Cannon, that he had a severe pain about the heart. She got a hot water bottle and applied it to his side, but it did not seem to give relief. As she turned to replenish the fire she heard a gurgling sund, and turning to the bedside saw that he was dying. She called Prof. Cannon and he hurred to Dr. Kibler's, but when the doctor arrived a few minutes later life was extinct.

Mr. Gibson was born in Fairfield county June 16, 1850, and moved to this county when a boy. He married Miss Elizabeth Caldwell, daughter of the late Joseph Caldwell of this county. Eight children were born to them. Three sons died young. The surviving children are Mrs. L. H. Hunt and Mrs. O. B. Cannon of Newberry, Mrs. Cecil Reid of Fredericksburg, Va., Mrs. Jas. N. McCaughrin of Newberry and Miss Nina Gibson, a student at Winthrop college.

Mr. Gibson was a faithful member of the Associate Reformed church. He was clerk of court of this county from 1897-1901. He was a man of gentle and quiet manner and fine appearance and had hosts of friends in this city and county.

William Fair Graham
Captain William Fair Graham, the first Superintendent of the Citadel Academy, to who death came in the form of consumption, was born June 15, 1818, in the town of Newberry, SC. He was the eldest son of Major James Fair Graham and Mary, his wife. Captain Graham's ancestors were Scotch-Irish on both sides, whence he no doubt derived his high sense of duty. He received his early training in Newberry. Subsequently he completed his education at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
Appointed Superintendent of the Citadel Academy upon the organization of its first Academic Board, February 24, 1843, he died on April 26, 1844, while in the discharge of his trust after a brief but faithful service of fourteen months.
Captain Graham is represented as having been a strict disciplinarian but urbane and polite, and "as amiable as a sweetly tempered woman." These are the qualities attributed to him by Messres. John L. Branchand John H. Swift, the surviving members of the first Graduating Class - that of 1846 - who served under him as cadets.
Col. Branch under date of October 8, 1892, writes as follows in relation to Captain Graham: _ "I was the last person who saw him alive. Early in the night, as officer of the Guard, I knocked at his room door with a view of giving him the countersign. A deep, hoarse, and almost inaudible voice responded - 'come in.' Upon opening the door, I approached his bedside, remarking, 'here is the countersign, Sir?' He laid his arm over towards me, and I placed the little triangularly folded and sealed paper in his right hand and left the room. It was found the next morning unopened. At what hour during that night
he died, no one ever knew. I found his hired man servant seated in a corner on the floor, and I suppose he remained
there all night. The next morning he reported to Lieutenant Capers: - 'I believe the Captain is dead.'
Captain Graham would not allow himself to give trouble or inconvenience to any one , and when the officers of the Institution offered on occasions to sit up with him, he courteously declined their kindness. Hence his being along the last night of his life. The corps of cadet fired volleys by the vault in St. Pauls Churchyard in which his body was placed."
Subsequently his mortal remains were laid away in the Newberry Cemetery among his kindred dead, having been escorted from the Citadel to the railway depot by the Corps of Cadets and the Washington Light Infantry. All the testimony goes to show that Captain Graham, who thus died in the service of the Citadel and led the way to the grave, was an accomplished officer and a true man, tender and dutiful.

Thomas West Gary
Col. Thomas West Gary died at his father’s residence near Gary’s Lane in Newberry District on 21st ult. after a brief illness with pneumonia, aged 30 years, 1 month and 27 days. It is seldom that tidings of death strikes the ear so unexpectedly and so painfully as in the above instance. He appeared in fine health only a few days before he died.
Col. Gary, tho a young man, filled a deservedly high place in the appreciative respect and regard of our people. His manliness of character, incorruptible integrity and staunch devotion to principle under all circumstances… but he remembered as one of our gallant defenders in the time of war. While in the Senior class of South Carolina College, at the call of his State (which was his country) he took up arms in her defense. As Orderly Sgt. of Company B in the 3rd S.C. Regt. he began military life. At the first opportunity he was elected Lt. and a few weeks afterward, at the death of lamented S.N. Davison, he was promoted to the Captaincy serving until October 1864 throughout most of the memorable campaigns of Lee’s Army in Virginia. The writer well remembers his gallantry at Chancellorsville. In 1864 when the death of the veteran leaders—Col. Nance and Rutherford—developed the command upon other hands he acted as Major. So great were his abilities he was commission by Govern Orr as Colonel of the 38th Regt. of Militia.
His body was buried in the graveyard of the Bush River Baptist Church where so many of his family sleep the last sleep.
