Former Newberry County Sheriff L.L. "Slim" Henderson, who was the oldest sheriff in South Carolina when he retired Jan. 3, died Monday of an apparent heart attack. Henderson, who would have been 80 in April, was remembered by law enforcement officers throughout the state as a patient, efficient veteran of law enforcement. "He was the first police officer I had contact with when he was chief of police in my home town of Prosperity," Newberry County's new sheriff, Lee Foster, said Tuesday. "He'd ride me around in the police car," Foster said. "And that's how I got interested in law enforcement." Foster, 33, started working for Henderson in 1980 and was eventually promoted to captain. Henderson decided not to seek re-election in the November election, and Foster was elected to succeed him. "I'm the sheriff now," Foster said. "But when I was younger, he guided me." Henderson began his law enforcement career as a Whitmire police officer in 1942 before going to Prosperity as chief of police. He was first elected sheriff in 1972, but lost a re-election bid in 1976. He was elected again in 1980, and was re-elected in 1984. Henderson is credited with starting the first fingerprint records system in Newberry County, and he assisted in starting the first central dispatching system throughout the county and state. He was chosen Police Officer of the Year in 1984 by the Newberry Exchange Club. Lexington County Sheriff James Metts, whose county adjoins Newberry, often worked closely with Henderson. "I remember when we worked a series of break-ins up on the county line, his patience and his tenacity paid off for all of us because we made the arrests and solved a tremendous number of break-ins," Metts said. "He was the kind of guy that never had much to say, but when he spoke, everybody listened," Metts said. Newberry Sheriff's Capt. Donnie Bobb remembered Henderson as "a terrific boss to work for." In the seven years Bobb worked for Henderson, "Every day he did something that I thought was great. He was a person that I looked up to." Bobb said Henderson accompanied his officers during raids on stills and marijuana fields, and he even joined all-night stakeouts. "He wouldn't ask his men to do anything he wouldn't do himself," he said. Henderson was the father-in-law of former University of South Carolina head basketball coach Frank McGuire. "He was very proud of that," Foster said. "We were all very proud of that, especially those of us that were Carolina graduates."
Henderson, of 1219 Kinard St., Newberry, was born in Stamford, Texas, a son of the late Robert Lee and Sarah Jane Crane Henderson. He was a member and former president of the Newberry Law Enforcement Officers Association, a member of the National Sheriff's Association, and the International Association of Chiefs of Police. Francis M. Hipp, a South Carolina corporate titan who helped build his
father's life insurance business into a financial and broadcasting empire, died
Monday. He was 84. A Newberry native, Hipp was among the best-known names in
South Carolina business, a man who planted the seeds of economic development in
the state while his own business grew. He and his brothers took over Liberty
Life Insurance Co. from their father in 1943. With Hipp as president, Liberty
Life blossomed into Liberty Corp., growing into a major insurer and broadcaster
whose properties include WIS-TV in Columbia. Hipp ceded the president's job to
his son Hayne in 1981, though he remained the company's chairman until last May.
He suffered a heart attack in Liberty's corporate lunch room Monday and died 30
minutes later at Greenville Memorial Hospital, a company spokesman said. His
wife, Shirley, died earlier this year.
Friends and colleagues remembered
Francis Hipp Monday as one of the founders of South Carolina's modern system of
business. He listened well and solved business problems with thoughtful
analysis, friends said. Business leaders like John Warren, former chairman of
South Carolina Electric & Gas, turned to him for counsel. ''He had unusual
insight,'' Warren said. ''He was always willing to listen and advise. He was
unselfish, he was kind and he was certainly my confidant.'' Hipp was named the
first chairman of South Carolina's modern development efforts, when they were
reorganized by Gov. Fritz Hollings in 1959. As chairman of the South Carolina
Development Board, Hipp helped jump-start extraordinary growth in South Carolina
today.
''If there is a reason for prosperity in South Carolina, it is
Francis Hipp,'' Hollings said Monday. ''What we needed was a successful
businessman talking to successful businessmen.''
Hipp could scare up
funding for development projects when it was scarce. Several business people
remember him financing projects through Liberty or his own pockets. ''He was a
fund-raiser par excellence,'' said Buck Mickel, former chairman of Fluor Daniel
Corp. ''When he called you, you said, 'Yes sir!' ''
Governors seeking new
industrial projects called on Hipp for hard sells that required the skills of a
successful businessman. As recently as 1992, Gov. Carroll Campbell sought his
help to court BMW.
Hipp was an avid hunter and fisherman. And he was an
avid teacher of young business people as well. ''Francis Hipp was a mentor to a
lot of people,'' SCANA Chairman Lawrence Gressette said.
When Mickel came
to Greenville, Hipp introduced him to the civic work expected of an Upstate
businessman. ''He sort of took me under his wing,'' Mickel said. ''He said,
'Now, Buck, these are the things you will do.' '' ''He's almost been like a
second father to me,'' said Ed Crutchfield, chief executive of banking giant
First Union Corp., who went to college with Hayne Hipp.
Crutchfield said
Francis Hipp offered him a job with Liberty back in the 1960s, and he nearly
took it. ''There has never been a man more in love with South Carolina than he
was,'' Crutchfield said. Commerce Secretary Robert Royall called Hipp's
contribution to the state enormous. ''Francis Hipp left the state in a lot
better condition because of his strong leadership and vision,'' Royall said. ''I
can honestly say I've never known anyone to work as hard and as consistently for
the entire state.''
Hipp, a graduate of The Citadel and Furman
University, was a trustee of The Citadel Development Foundation and the South
Carolina Foundation of Independent Colleges. He helped create the Business
Partnership Foundation at the University of South Carolina; one of the two
College of Business Administration buildings at USC is named for
him.
Hipp is survived by two sons, Hayne and John Boyd Hipp of Atlanta,
and a daughter, Mary Jane Hipp Brock of New York.
A memorial service is
planned for 10 a.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church in Greenville. A
private family burial will follow at Springwood Cemetery.
The family has
requested no flowers be sent, and that contributions to the charity of one's
choice be made in the name of Francis M. Hipp. Mackey Mortuary in Greenville is

Newberry, Sept 30 - The death of the Rev. George W. Holland, D. D., which occurred at 5:30 o'clock this morning, was a sad and sudden announcement that caused a feeling of sorrow to pervade the hearts of all our people. Dr. Holland died of organic heart disease, with which he had been afflicted for many months. The fatal attack came on at 4 o'clock, and he, himself, had the attending physician summoned half an hour later. But the end was near and human skill was of no avail. He expired gently, his last words being, "God bless Newberry College".
He spent the summer in Virginia, and returned last Tuesday from Staunton, Va., where he attended as a delegate the meeting of the united synod of the southern Lutheran church. He privately expressed there to his intimate friends the belief that he would not be able to perform the duties of the coming session of Newberry college. When the attack came upon him this morning he walked to the adjoining residence of Prof. Sligh, on the college campus, and requested him to summon a physician. Dr. Houseal reached his side about twenty minutes before he died.
Rev. Geo. W. Holland, Ph. D., D.D. was born in Augusta county, Va., and at the time of his death was in his 57th year. He was graduated in 1857 from Roanoke college under the presidency of Rev. Dr. Bittle, whose eldest daughter he afterwards married, and who survives him. He studied theology in Union Theological seminary, New York, and afterwards at Gettysburg seminary, Pennsylvania, graduating from the latter in 1860. In the same year he was licensed to preach by the Evangelical Lutheran synod of Virginia, and from 1860-1861 was pastor at Harrisonburg, Va. He served in the Confederate army in 1861-63, having lost his left arm in the campaigns of northern Virginia. In 1864-67 he was professor in Roanoke college, and then for six years pastor again at Harrisonburg, Va. In 1873 he moved to South Carolina and was pastor at Pomaria, Newberry county, for one year, when he was elected professor of Latin and Greek in Newberry college, then located at Walhalla. This chair he acceptably filled until 1877, when the college was relocated at Newberry and Dr. Smeltzer resigned the presidency of the institution and Rev. Dr. Bowman was elected to that position, with Dr. Holland as vice president. Dr. Bowman declined the honor. Dr. Holland, in 1878, was elected president of the college and has thus filled the office with great ability for seventeen years. In 1884 Roanoke college conferred the degree of Ph. D. upon him, and the South Carolina college conferred the degree of D. D. upon him in 1888, and at the commencement of that institution that year he preached the baccalaureate sermon.
The wisdom of the board of trustees in placing him at the head of Newberry college has been attested by its continued growth, and each year has seen an increase in its popularity. Dr. Holland wisely directed all the affairs of the college and he had the satisfaction of beholding the great results of his life work. He was a polished gentleman, an eminent scholar, endowed with peculiar qualities which well fitted him for his office, and was one of the foremost educators of the south. As a disciplinarian he was kind and considerate, yet firm and positive, and his management of the students won their love and admiration. His death is a great loss to the college, the church, the State and the community.
He was also a prominent member of the Knights of honor, and frequently attended the supreme conventions as a delegate from this State, and was for many years grand reporter for the State lodge.
His devotion to Newberry college was something beyond comprehension to the human side of our natures. He frequently declined easier and better paying and more prominent positions, but the success of Newberry was near to his heart and he stood by her in her darkest days and lived to see her star of hope arise. The college session was to open tomorrow.
Prosperity - December 20 - Chesley Hunter who was reported hurt yesterday by having been caught in gin belt, died last night about 8 o'clock without having regained consciousness. Mr. Hunter's death is a distinct loss to the community in which he lived. He conducted a sawmill, public gin and other enterprises in addition to his large farming interest. Mr. Hunter was about 50 years old and unmarried. He leaves his mother, two brothers and four sisters. His remains were laid to rest in the Prosperity Cemetery this afternoon.
Sudden Death of Sam'l A. Hawkins – A Young Man of great Promise from Prosperity
Samuel A. Hawkins, a bright, handsome and promising young man of Prosperity,
died yesterday morning at 9:30 in the Columbia hospital of peritonitis resulting
from an operation for appendicitis, performed last Friday, the day after he
entered the hospital. The body was taken to his former home in Prosperity
yesterday afternoon on a special train over the Columbia, Newberry and Laurens
raod. The funeral will be held at Prosperity this morning. The death of young
Hawkins was peculiarly sad. Up to the time of his illness which developed last
week he had hardly known an aches or a pain. Healthy in mind and body he had a
powerful physique and was a handsome fellow, six feet two inches and weighing
180 pounds. He had just graduated from Newberry college in June, was energetic
and ambitious, and the only son of Mr. J. H. Hawkins, a Prosperity merchant of
means and influence in his section. He was also an only grandson. The
unfortunate victim of the dreaded disease who was so suddenly cut down just as
he was entering upon what, from every indication, promised to be a useful and
creditable career, was a manly youth of many fine qualities and sensibilities
and was especially popular at college and among his home associates who knew him
best. Everything that could suggest itself to devoted parents of an only son was
done for young Hawkins in the little time that these parents had to act. A Johns
Hopkins specialist was hurried to his side in the person of Dr. J. C. Bloodgood,
who performed the operation with the assistance of three local
physicians.
