Col. Robert L. McCaughrin

Newberry, Jan 27 - Col. Robert L. McCaughrin died this morning at 11 o'clock. He was born in Columbia Sept. 3, 1834, and was therefore just a little more than 61 years old. He attended the schools of Columbia, but when a mere boy entered the world of business, and after clerking for a time in Columbia he went to Charleston, where he was engaged in the mercantile business. From Charleston he came to Newberry in 1854, just then 20 years old, and was bookkeeper in the Bank of Newberry. From this position, upon the resignaton of Col. Thos. W. Holloway, he was made cashier of the bank. In 1860 Mr. McCaughrin resigned as cashier and entered into mercantile business with Mr. Jno. B. Carwile under the firm name of Carwile & McCaughrin. He served in the war as quartermaster with rank of captain. After the war the firm of Carwile & McCaughrin resumed business and had a large trade, and it was through this firm that the cotton sold on the market, they acting as the banking agents of Geo. W. Williams of Charleston. The results of the war found them heavily indebted, but they went to work to rebuild their fortunes and made satisfactory arrangements with their creditors and soon were on their feet.

Mr. McCaughrin was of a hopeful and cheerful disposition, and never lost faith in his people and it was largely through his influence and the influence of his firm that the people of this county began the work of liquidation and soon found themselves in better financial condition than those of some other sections of the State. In 1870 Mr. McCaughrin bought out the interest of Mr. Carwile and continued the business on his own account until 1871, when the National Bank of Newberry was organized and he was called to the presidency of that institution, and with it and its history he was identified until his death. The bank under his administration has been eminently successful.

In 1883 he was largely instrumental in organizing and in finally building the Newberry cotton mills. He was elected president, and also held the position until his death. He was closely identified with every interest of the county, and his death will effect more people and more interests than the death of almost any other man in this community. He was a born financier, and whatever he put his hands to succeeded. His acquaintance with the people of this county was better than that of almost any man in it, and his death will be felt in every part of it. As said above, he had great confidence in the people of this county and was always ready to help anyone who was showing any disposition to help himself. It was an inspiration and encouragement to talk with him, so hopeful and cheerful was he at all times and so uniformly courteous and polite to every one.

He married in 1854 to Miss Anna Kirkpatrick of Charleston, a daughter of Dr. Kirkpatrick of the Presbyterian church. There are two children living by this union; two having preceded him to the spirit land. His first wife died about 1857. In the fall of 1870 he was married to Miss Laura Nance of Newberry, who died in 1885. By this union he leaves surviving him three daughters and one son. Col. McCaughrin was for many years an consistent member of the Presbyterian church, and at the time of his death had been a ruling elder in the church at Newberry for 15 years, and was also a director in the Columbia Theological seminary.

His remains will be laid to rest in the Rosemount cemetery, in the family lot, tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 o'clock. His health began to fail more than a year ago, but he has been unable to attend to business since last summer and early fall. He was a good man and wil be sorely missed in this community. The record of his life should be an inspiration to young men. It only demonstrates what may be accomplished by energy, will power and good judgment. E.H.A.

Jones Morgan

BUFFALO SOLDIER DIES AT 110, WAS S.C. NATIVE

South Carolina-born Jones Morgan, a member of the Buffalo Soldiers -- the famous black cavalry unit that fought in the Spanish-American War -- has died at age 110. He died Sunday of kidney failure in a Richmond hospital.
Morgan, whose energy often belied his age, was part of the unit that joined Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders in their charge up Cuba's San Juan Hill in 1898. "The old soldier rode off into the sunset one last time," family friend Lossie Winters said.
Congress created the black units -- the 9th and 10th Cavalry and the 24th and 25th Infantry regiments -- from the ranks of the U.S. Colored Troops of the Civil War. They fought Indians, led wagon trains and kept order in western towns. The units remained segregated until the 1940s.
The soldiers earned their nickname from Indians because of their big coats, curly hair and fierce fighting style, said Bill Hunter, historian of the 24th Regiment Association.
Morgan was born to freed slaves on a Newberry County farm on Oct. 23, 1882, the 14th of 15 children.
When he was 15, he ran off and joined the 9th Cavalry. He watched as Buffalo Soldiers joined the Rough Riders in their famous charge on July 1, 1898.
"They used me for domestic stuff. Anything they needed fixing in the place, they sent me," Morgan told The Associated Press in a 1991 interview.
In the past three years, Morgan met with Gen. Colin Powell, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and former President Bush.
Morgan became known as a living legend to thousands of Virginia students who invited him to visit their schools.
"I always said let my last days be my best days," Morgan said at his 108th birthday party thrown by students at Armstrong High School in Richmond. "And it's come true."
