Newberry soldiers leaving to fight the Spanish-American War Capt. W. S. Langford organized the Newberry Guards in 1897. Members from this unit volunteered for service in the Spanish-Am. War. Downtown Newberry stores closed on the day of departure. 96 men formed at the armory & marched to the depot to depart for Columbia on May 10, 1898. The officers were: 1st Lt. R. H. Wearn, 2nd Sgt. J. G. Daniel, & 3rd Sgt. T. O. Stewart Jr.
