The Newberry Observer, Monday, June 30, 1980, page
5A
The 40th Reunion of the Newberry High school Class of 1940, held
at the Newberry Country Club June 21, originiated partly because of a
column in The Newberry Observer.
Earlier this year, Doug Freeland,
in his weekly column, "So It Goes," quoted from a letter by an out-of-town
writer who wished to be unidentified, "Why can't the Newberry High School
of 1940 ever have a Reunion?"
Never one to resist a challenge,
class president Carrie Lee McSwain Pritchard, who herself had long had the
same idea, picked up this rolling ball and tossed it in the direction of
Keitt Purcell, Dalton Carpenter, Ed Hazel, Corinne Moon and Bill Ringer,
among others, finally landing it in the capable hands of Jean Todd, who,
aided by Carrie Lee's comprehensive planning and the committee' actions,
brought it on in home.
It was a team effort, ranging from the
search for addresses of members who had seemingly disappeared to such
details as menu planning and the subject of finance. The enthusiasm
generated by Carrie Lee and Jean was catching and the efforts put forth
resulted in a packed ballroom Saturday night. Over 100 members of
the class and their guests attended. Others sharing the credit for
the event include Joe Jackson, Mildred Shealy Bouknight, Mary Nancy
Robertson, Buck Connelly, Lewis Price and Jane Ragland.
The social
hour, beginning at 6:30 p.m., passed too quickly for old friends renewing
acquaintance after many years, often adjusting their bifocals to read the
nae tags (Complete with 1940 annual picture) to be sure of proper
identification. The genearal opinion was that changes were all for
the better. Most members brought guests, a husband, wife, children,
or friends.
Places for the buffet dinner were marked by a miniature
dipolma containing a replica of the 1940 Commencement Program.
The
Reunion Program featured a cover design by Sara Linda ("Sa Sa") Barron and
gave recognition to those class members no long living. The "In
Memoriam" section included the names of Huiet Clary, Livingston Davenport,
Tom Davis, Janette Dickert, Thomas Folk, Sara Cromer Hamilton, Sara
Reighley Morris, Warren "Mick" Robertson, John Senn and Ralph
Zobel.
Rev. P. W. Turner of Langley, S.C. and a class member, gave
the Invocation. Master of Ceremonies Keitt Purcell presided over the
festivites, which included a greeting from class president Pritchard and
the awarding of various prizes.
Winners for "changing the least"
were Mary Livingston Owens, who still looks remarkably like her high
school annual picture, and Jimmy Sease, a perennial class
favorite.
Paralee Turner Mock was the indisputable winner for
"coming the farthest distance" - she came from Eugene, Ore. Others
who travelled considerable distances included Gladys McAlpin West of
Longwood, Fla., Stella Senn Williams from Lexington, Ky., Rook Purcell
Brown of Birmingham, Ala., Mary Kohn Hicks of Southbridge, Mass., and
Hubert Smith of Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
The award for the most children
(Five) went to Arthur "Ott" Cochcoft and his wife "Sal," while Ernestine
Shealy Counts and husband David claimed the award for the most
grandchildren as well as that for being married the longest.
Genevieve Thomasson Senn and husband Angus were winners for being married
the shortest time.
Professor P. K. Harmon, Newberry High Principal
in 1940, responded to the class greetings, and other remarks were made by
Hubert Smith and Dalton Carpenter. Kathleen Lominick Jennings of
Columbia thanked the Reunion Planning Committe for the "memorable event"
and admitted that hers had been the "out-of-town" letter which started the
whole thing.
Following the dinner, members and guests gave a
performance of the Newberry High Fight Song )Words written by Mrs. Marian
Wilson) and sentimental rendition of the Alma Mater (words by Miss Julia
Kibler). Miss Kibler was among faculty members present at (remaining
article is missing)...
