Farley, M. Foster Professor 81 years old, formerly of Newberry, died 5/17/2003 in the Tucker Nursing Home in Tucker, Ga. Professor Farley was born in Dyersburg, Tenn., the son of the late Myron and Mary Hamilton Farley. Professor Farley was an associate professor of history at Newberry College for 34 years, retiring as professor of history emeritus in 1992. Prof. Farley served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, and was discharged in 1946 with the rank of Sergeant. Prof. Farley is survived by a daughter, Mary Alice Farley of Escondido, Calif.; a son, Marc Steven Farley of Atlanta, Ga.; and two grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Ethel Nifong Farley. Farr, Veita Rae “Mama Rae” Lindler Mrs. 64 years old, of Little Mountain, died March 23, 2003.Born in Chapin, Mrs. Farr was a daughter of the late Ernest and Ruth Amick Lindler. Mrs. Farr was survived by her husband, James Thomas Farr; two sons, David and Carol Farr, and Allen and Cindy Farr, all of Little Mountain; two daughters, Frances Farr of Prosperity, and Karen and Jeff Monroe of Simpsonville; six sisters, Rebecca Long, Margie Monts, Christine Dowd, Shirley Emmanuel, Jenny Freeman, and Kathy Glymph; a brother, J.R. Felker, Shirley 63 years old, died November 4, 2003 at L & B Care Home of Saluda. Born in Pomaria, she was a daughter of the late Forest and Juanita Ringer Felker. Fellers, Robert L. “Bob” of Prosperity, died Sept. 16, 2003. Born in Charleston, he was a son of the late Quay Hood and Laura Kunkle Fellers. Mr. Fellers was survived by his wife, Lucy Ryals; a sister and brother-in-law, Lisa and David Taylor of Columbia; a special friend, Rhonda Fellers and two nephews.  Burial was in Prosperity Cemetery. Fesperman, Francis I. Rev. Dr.  81 years old, of Newberry, died July 2, 2003 at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital. Born October 19, 1921 in Draper, N.C., Dr. Fesperman was the son the late Luther A. and Beulah B. Fesperman. Dr. Fesperman was survived by his wife, Kathleen C. Fesperman; a daughter, Martha F. Marky and son-in-law, Raymond L. Marky of Tallahassee, Fla.; a son, Paul Fesperman and daughter-in-law, Gayle Fesperman of Duncan; a brother, Bill Fesperman of Huntersville, N.C.; three grandchildren, Ray Marky, III, Bob Marky, Angela Marky; and a great grandson, Blaine Marky all of Tallahassee, Fla. Fielders, Tina Alicia Hatcher 25 years old, of Easley, died Aug. 21, 2003 at Greenville Memorial Hospital. Born in Greenwood, Mrs. Fielders was reared in Newberry County and was the daughter of Raymond B. Hatcher, Jr. and Suzanne Alicia Mills Hatcher of Enoree. In addition to her parents she was survived by her husband, Jared Caleb Fielders of the home; a son, Corbin Tyler Fielders, two years old, and a daughter, Caleista Jade Fielders, 10 weeks old, both of the home; a brother, Nathan Pierce Hatcher of Enoree; and her maternal grandmother, Martha Louise Hatcher of Greenville. Fisher, Alfred Grayson Rev. 81 years old, of Newberry died on March 15 2003. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Katherine Blanton Fisher and three daughters, Linda Cook of Gaffney, Brenda Dowis and Kathy Quinn of Cowpens; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. A native of Spartanburg County, he was the son of Jasper and Naomi Thomas Fisher. He was the last living member of his family; there were two brothers and four sisters that predeceased him. Flemon, Willie Mae Mrs. 88 years old, widow of John Flemon, formerly of Pomaria, died 9/9/2003 at Lexington Extended Care in Lexington. Born in Newberry County, she was a daughter of the late Robert Holley and the late Mrs. Lila Johnson Holley. Surviving are three sons, Thomas “Tee” (Marian) Flemon, Joe Louis (Marlene) Flemon and Carl (Anne Annette) Flemon, all of Pomaria; two daughters, Mrs. Hattie Heller (Robin) Moorehead of Columbus, Ohio, Mrs. Tenetha (Henry) Hall of Pomaria; 39 grandchildren, including Thomas Flemon, Jr., Donnell Hall, Karen Flemon, Hubert Goree, Jr. and LaQuidon Flemon, reared in the home; a “special granddaughter,” Felicia Shantee Parker; one brother-in-law, Joe (Mary Louise) Cannon of Sneedsferry, N.C.; one sister, Genell Oxner of Irmo; two sisters-in-law, Queenie F. Floyd, Eloise Clardy 96 years old, wife of the late John Clark Floyd, died Nov. 27, 2003, at Laurel Crest Retirement Center. A native of Laurens, she was a daughter of the late Birket Lee and Alma Shell Clardy. Surviving were sons, John C. Floyd, Jr. and his wife, Ann, of Murrells Inlet; and B. Lee Floyd and his wife, Betty of Columbia; sister, Virginia C. Ballentine of Laurens; grandchildren, J. Clark Floyd, III of Savannah, Ga., and Virginia Hunter Floyd of Atlanta, Ga.; step-grandchildren, Elizabeth Arden Pennington of Birmingham, Ala., and Katherine Lee Marcus of Winston-Salem, N.C., and three great-grandchildren. Foster, Claude B. Jr., 75 years old, of Silverstreet, died December 18, 2003 at Ridgeway Health Care Center. Mr. Foster was born on July 18, 1928 in Spartanburg County, a son of the late Claude R. and Elizabeth Nelson Foster. Mr. Foster was survived by his wife, Earlene Moates Foster, of the home; three daughters, Ellen L. F. Wilson, of Silverstreet, Mary F. Chapman and Betty Jane Foster, both of Newberry; a son, Claude L. Foster, of Silverstreet; a sister, Estelle Livingston, of Newberry; two grandsons, James O. Wilson and Glenn E. Franklin, Ernest H. 74 years old, of Newberry died Sept. 8, 2003 at his home. He was born in Whitmire, and was a son of the late Ernest Foster Franklin and Leila Broom Rochester and his stepfather Wallace Rochester. He was retired from the Army National Guard, was a member of the American Legion and was a U.S. Army Veteran. Surviving are two daughters, Judy Farmer and Peggy Hueble, both of Whitmire; two grandchildren, Amy Foster of Newberry and Jason Hueble of Whitmire. Burial was in the Whitmire Cemetery. Fuller, Ernestine McCartha 93 years old, formerly of  Newberry, widow of Johnnie J. Fuller, died Oct. 2, 2003 at J.F. Hawkins Nursing Home. Mrs. Fuller was born on Feb. 6, 1910 in Lexington, a daughter of the late Jacob F. and Sallie Hallman McCartha. Mrs. Fuller was survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Betty and Boyd Smith and Margaret Sligh, all of Newberry; a brother, Jacob F. McCartha of Garden City; two grandsons, Johnny Sligh and Hugh B. Smith, both of Newberry; and two great grandchildren, Aubrey Smith and Lauryn Smith, both of Newberry. Fulmer, Elizabeth “Bessie” Paysinger 93 years old, formerly of Newberry, died May 22, 2003.  Born on October 18, 1909, in Newberry, she was the daughter of the late Jacob Robertson and Sara Summer Paysinger. She was married to the late Harold Carland Fulmer. She was survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth F. and Allen S. Hawkins, of Lugoff, and four sons and daughters-in-law: Robert C. and Bettye H. Fulmer, Harold M. and Lynne M. Fulmer, and Carol P. and Susan H. Fulmer all of Newberry, and Karl E. and Georgie Faye G. Fulmer of Chapin. Mrs. Fulmer is also survived by one sister, Mary Nell Paysinger. Burial was in Colony Lutheran Church Cemetery. Fulmer, Thomas Edward 56 years old, of Prosperity, died 4/6/2003 at his residence. Mr. Fulmer was born on November 19, 1946 in Lexington County, a son of Inis McCormick Fulmer and the late Morgan Fulmer. He was a 22-year veteran of the SC National Guard, Saluda Unit. He was survived by his mother of Ridge Spring; his wife, Carol Jean Garner Fulmer of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Tonya J. and Mike Rodgers of Prosperity; two sons, Thomas Edward Fulmer, Jr. of Monroe, N.C. and Travis Scott Fulmer of Dallas, Texas; a step-son and daughter-in-law, Travis and Susan Chapman of Newberry; four sisters, Virginia Robertson of Saluda, Elizabeth Sox of Chapin, Vernell Collins of West Columbia and Katherine Berry of Monetta; two brothers, Kenneth Wayne Fulmer of Ridge Spring and James David Fulmer of Leesville; four grandchildren, Dylan Fulmer and Jessica Chapman, both of Newberry, Alicyn Rodgers and Garrett Rodgers, both of Prosperity. Gilliam, Willie Robert 74 YEARS OLD, formerly of Newberry and Batesburg, died on April 16, 2003 in Sacramento, Calif. Mr. Gilliam was born on July 22, 1928 in Newberry, a son of the late Lonnie B. and Ora Lee Bridges Gilliam. Mr. Gilliam was a veteran of the Armed Services during the later part of World War II. Willie served for 15 years in the 246th Army Band as an E6. He was a percussionist and Motor Pool Sargent for the band in the Newberry SCARNG. Mr. Gilliam was survived by his wife, Melvie of Sacramento, CA; a daughter, Mrs. Russell (Amy) Fox of Batesburg. Willie got to see her, hug, and kiss her, as she flew out to see him, before his death as he as suffering with amnesia and cancer. Willie had two grandchildren, Roman and Ali Fox, both of Batesburg; three brothers, Ralph Gilliam of Greenville, Herbert Lee Gilliam of Lake Murray and Bobby Gilliam of Lexington. Survived by wife of 40 years, Diane Lunsford Gresham; four daughters and sons-in-law: Michelle & Russell Armstrong of Prosperity, Melissa & Kenny Sanders of Newberry, Anna & Rusty Farmer of Prosperity, Amy & Sam Reynolds of Lancaster; eight grandchildren: Claire, Emily and Amy Ruth Armstrong – Krystal and Gabrielle Sanders  - Preston and Albert Farmer – Cameron Gresham Reynolds; brother and sister-in-law Dollie & Robert Lunsford of Columbia; hospice nurse, Cheryl Zafoot. Griffin, James Benson "Ben" 24 years old of Newberry, died September 1, 2003. He was survived by his parents, Wesley and Helen M. Griffin; paternal grandparents, Gene and Willie Mae Lipscomb of Prosperity and his maternal grandparents, Al and Joan Hellar of Greenville. Griffin, James of Newberry died Oct. 14, 2003 at Newberry County Memorial Hospital. Born in Newberry County, he was the son of the late Jessie Griffin Suber and Willie Rutherford. Surviving are one son, Willie Williams of Newberry; six sisters, Narvis (Otto) Gray, Barbara A. (Eddie) Dawkins, Geraldine (Michael) Lietzsey and Beverly (Jesse) Johnson, Jr., Marion Tobias and Wygenia Scott; one brother, Charles Griffin, all of Newberry; two aunts, Lucy Cannon of Thomasville, N.C. and Sarah Henderson of Newberry; two uncles, John W. Griffin of Washington, D.C. and John B. Sligh, Sr. of Newberry. Burial was at St. Matthews AME Church Cemetery. F. B. Pratt & Son Funeral Home, Inc. was in charge of arrangements. Griffin, John Phillip “Stud” 81 years old, of Pomaria, died Oct. 16, 2003 at Newberry County Memorial Hospital. Born in Pomaria, he was a son of the late Oral Thomas and Gladys Richardson Griffin. He was a World War II Army veteran. He was survived by his wife, Frances Woodward Griffin; daughters, Paula G. Williams and Nancy G. Costello, both of Pomaria; brothers, Edward R. Griffin and Bright M. Griffin, both of Pomaria; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Burial was at Bethlehem Lutheran Church Cemetery. Grim, George William Jr. of Chapin, died July 20, 2003 at Palmetto Richland Hospital in Columbia. Born in Eufaula, Ala., he was the son of the late George W. Grim, Sr. and the late Lula Mae Thomas Townsend. He was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church in Chapin. Surviving are a god-mother, Mrs. Carrie Gray; brothers, William White and Mac Arthur Grim of Cincinnati, Ohio; sisters, Thelma Hill of Eufaula, Ala., Annie L. Grim of Inwood, L.I. New York, Winnie P. Banks of Columbus, Ga., Dorothy White of Columbus, Ga. and Bettye Bishop of Cincinnati. Burial was in Mount Zion Baptist Church Cemetery in Chapin. Wilson Funeral Home of Newberry was in charge.
