Ragsdale, Eileen Coleman 94 years old, died Feb. 12, 2003. Born in Feasterville, Feb. 9, 1909, she was a daughter of the late Dr. Robert Coleman and Mattie Rabb Coleman and was the widow of Claude Hunter Ragsdale, Jr. She was survived by her son, C.H. “Pete” Ragsdale III of Blair; daughters, Diane R. Sanders of Columbia and Linda E. Ragsdale of Blair; six grandchildren, Deborah P. Ferguson of York, Lisa S. Matuse of Winnsboro, Dina L. Plampin of St. Stephen, Scotti Sanders of Winnsboro, Betsy Miller of Mt. Pleasant and Michael Huggins of Newberry; and five great-grandchildren. In addition to her loving husband of 60 years, Mrs. Ragsdale was also predeceased by a grandson, Michael A. Plampin. Burial was at the Salem Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Newberry Observer 2/14/2003

Rawls, Lula Ella Miss 83 years old, of Pomaria, died Feb. 28 2003 at Newberry County Memorial Hospital. Born in Pomaria, she was a daughter of the late Alvin and Clara Wicker Rawls. Miss Rawls was survived by a sister, Ruby M. Graham of Pomaria; a brother, John William Rawls of Prosperity. She was predeceased by a sister, Brunnell Rawls. Burial was in Newberry Memorial Gardens. Rayford, Dorothy Chick Mrs. of 35 Railroad Ave., Whitmire, died June 19, 2003 at Palmetto Baptist Hospital in Columbia. Born in Newberry County, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin Franklin Chick and Marie Whitener Chick. She was survived by her husband, Rev. Dolphus E. Rayford; two children, Myrna Rayford Johnson of Yorktown, Va. and Rev. Stanley E. Rayford of Troy, Mich.; one son-in-law, Charles E. Johnson and one daughter-in-law, Robin L. Rayford; three grandchildren, Eric Johnson of Arlington, Texas, Adam Johnson of College Station, Texas, and Heather Rayford of Indianapolis, Ind.; two brothers, Hugh M. Reeder, Bessie L. Ms. of Chappells, died July 16, 2003 at her home. Born in Newberry County, she was the daughter of the late John Henry Reeder and the late Mrs. Ruth Brown Reeder. A son, Nathaniel Reeder, predeceased her. Surviving were two sons, Horace Reeder of the home and Anthony (Robbie) Reeder of Iraq; two daughters, Mae Ruth Reeder of the home and Angela R. Reuter, Dolores Betty 74 years old, of Baraboo, Wis., died Sept. 26, 2003 at her home. Dolores, the daughter of the late Roman and Ann Bayer Schoenmann, was born on July 22, 1929 in Plain, Wis. Mrs. Reuter is survived by her loving husband of almost 54 years, Ed Reuter of the home; ten children, Pam (George) McDonald, of Madison, Wis., Patti (Jim) Pederson of Freeport, Fla., Dennis (Lynette) Reuter of Prairie du Sac, Wis., Michael (Jenny) Reuter of Madison, Wis., Peggy (Kirk) Garoutte and Penny Young, all of Anchorage, Alaska, Jill Walls of Madison, Wis., Jan Reuter (and friend, Jon Backeberg) of Reedsburg, Wis., Michelle Reuter of Madison, Wis., and Lisa (Dennis) Janke of Baraboo; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren; her special cousins, Anita Bindl and Lorraine Lawrence; a brother-in-law, Gerald (Miriam) Reuter of Prosperity; four sisters-in-law, Margie (Ray) Lease of Barneveld, Wis., Marie Reuter of Baraboo, Wis., Shirley Schmid of Waunakee, Wis., and Rosemary Herndon of Baraboo. Richardson, Julius Roy 81 years old, died July 18, 2003. Mr. Richardson was born in Irmo, son of the late Julius Perry and Julia Derrick Richardson. In 1944, he was commissioned as Ensign in the U.S. Navy, whereby he was oriented at Princeton and studied the Russian language at the University of Colorado. He furthered his military training at the Intelligence School in New York. He was posted in Petropavlovak, Siberia as a metrologist, with the primary objective of monitoring the Soviet military activities in the area during World War II. He was also a member of the CIA. He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years. He was survived by five children, Jeffrey (Patricia) Richardson of Nashotah, Wis., John (Debbie) Richardson of Spartanburg, Thomas (Kam) Richardson of Florence, Geneva (Steve) Cromer of Myrtle Beach and Phoebe (Bill) Seals of Marion; grandchildren, Julius Richardson, II, Meg Richardson, Thalia Richardson, Clay Cromer, Carlyle Cromer, Roy Cromer, Jack Cromer, Katie Richardson, Boyd Richardson, William Seals, III, Tasha McCutcheon and Chelsea Gartman; a sister, Betty R. Fulmer of Newberry; brothers Walter E. Richardson of Irmo and Rev. Clarence L. Richardson of White Rock. He was predeceased by a brother, Ralph W. Richardson of Irmo. Richardson, Vanessa M. 84 years old, of Newberry, widow of Melvin (Rich) Richardson, died Dec. 27, 2003, at Newberry County Memorial Hospital. Born in Newberry County, Mrs. Richardson was a daughter of the late Luther Patrick Martin and Lula Stockman Martin Padgett. She was survived by two sons, Jerry M. (Doris) Richardson of Knoxville, Tenn., and Don Ricky (Nancy) Richardson of Prosperity; two daughters, Judy (Johnny) Finley, of North Augusta, and Sonja M. Richardson of Prosperity; a sister, Catherine Derrick of Newberry; 9 grandchildren, Jerri Lynn Shealy, Brent A. Richardson, Don R. Richardson, Jr., Wally Richardson, Mollie Susan Respass, Summer Finley, Adam Finley, Ronda Najjar, and John V. Finley, Jr. She was predeceased by sisters, Bertha Floyd and Daisy Fulmer; and a brother, L. T. Martin. Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at by the Rev. Lynn Peters. Mr. Rinehart was a U.S. Navy veteran. He was survived by his wife, Margaret Pressley Rinehart of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Pastor Grady and Beth Worthy of Joanna; three daughters and son-in-law, Amanda Alexander of the home, Cathy and Steve Elledge of Clinton and Teresa Fuller of Charleston; six sisters, Helen Richardson of Newberry, Betty Pitts of Spartanburg, Raynell Crompton of Pelion, Clara Clark of Columbia, Barbara Williamson of Salley and Shelby Wingard of West Columbia; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Born in Newberry he was a son of the late Ernest Edgar and Mary Frances ‘Mae” Haile Ringer. He was in the US Army and US Air Force Reserves. Rister; beloved grandchildren, especially Melissa Fleming and Wendy Sanders, who provided loving care, and great-grandchildren, especially Matthew and Jessica Fleming, who brought her much joy and happiness; and great-great-grandchildren. Ruff, George Sligh Jr. of Union, died February 17 2003. He was born in Newberry County on May 3, 1917, a son of George S. Ruff, Sr. and Nenie Caldwell Ruff. He was a veteran of World War II. He was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster for service with the IV Infantry Division in the Invasion of Normandy. He was survived by his wife, Elizabeth R. (Lib) of 52 years; a daughter, Margaret C. (Margie) Ruff of the home; a son, Lieutenant Colonel George R. Ruff and his wife, Margarita. Mr. Ruff had four grandchildren, Bradley, Brian and Barton of Athens, Ala. and Gabriella of Alexandria, Va. Also, three sisters, Mrs. Dayton E. (Catherine) Hardwick of Bedford, N.H., Mrs. Edward W. Ruff, Marian Halfacre 88 years old, of Newberry, wife of the late Robert Lee Ruff, died July 18, 2003 at White Oak Manor in Newberry. Mrs. Ruff was born July 31, 1914, in Newberry County, the daughter of the late Crenshaw B. Halfacre and Essie Wilson Halfacre. Mrs. Ruff was survived by a daughter, Elizabeth Ann R. Wise of Batesburg; a son and daughter-in-law, Robert Marion (Robby) and Wilma Ruff of Newberry; a sister, Lurleen H. Eargle of Newberry; one grandchild and spouse, Susan Marian and Michael (Mike) Swygert, and two great grandchildren, Brooke and Taylor Swygert, all of Newberry. Ruff, Virgil Hans, 88 years old, of Prosperity, died December 19, 2003 at White Oak Manor. Mr. Ruff was born on January 21, 1915, in Prosperity, a son of the late William Foster and Mary Elizabeth Stockman Ruff. He was the last surviving member of his family.  In 1942, he volunteered for service in the Navy during WWII. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in December of 1945and he married Martha Staley. They had one son, William Joseph Ruff, who resided in Indianapolis, Ind. In 1968 he married Willie Floyd Ruff widow of his youngest brother, Julian Ruff who died in 1964. Upon his retirement, he and his wife moved back to South Carolina, to a home in Prosperity. He was predeceased by his siblings Julian Duane Ruff, Marvin Ruff, Bertha Ruff, Harold Ruff, Geraldine Ruff, Myrtle Ruff, Raymond Ruff, and Isador Ruff. He was survived by his second wife Willie Floyd Ruff and his son William Joseph Ruff of Indianapolis Indiana. Burial was in Newberry Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Sims was survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and James Mills of Newberry; a sister, Patsy Parker of Great Falls; grandchildren, Angie M. Born in Newberry County, he was the son of the late John Wesley Singleton, Sr. and the late Mrs. Sula Miller Singleton. He was a veteran of World War II. His wife, Ellen Henderson Singleton, and three children, Mrs. Verdell S. Holmes, John Wesley Singleton III and Mrs. Diann S. Nance, predeceased him. Smith, Robert Vaughan "Bobby" 82 years old, died October 28, 2003, at his home in Prosperity. Mr. Smith was born on June 29, 1921 in Richmond, Virginia, a son of the late Bettine and Everett Monroe Smith. In 1941, when World War II was declared, he left Virginia Tech and enlisted in the Army Air Force, where he served in the 396th Bomber Squadron – 41st Air Bomber Group, until his discharge in June, 1945. He completed 52 missions in the Pacific Theater of operations during his tour of duty, awarded two Purple Hearts, two Distinguished Cross Medals and gave the first in-flight blood transfusion to a wounded crewmember when their plane was struck by enemy fire. Mr. Smith was survived by his wife, Mary Jane "Susie" Smith of the home; three stepsons and their wives, Edward and Patti Yates of Staunton, Virginia, Richard and Diane Yates of Colonial Heights, Virginia, and Keith and Sharon Yates of Clear Brook, Va.; eight step-grandchildren and one step-great granddaughter survive him. He was preceded by a brother, Montie Rae Smith, who was survived by his wife, Helen and their daughter, Suzanne Word, both of Charlottesville, Virginia. Newberry Observer 10/31/2003
