Tankersley, Doris age 74 years old, of Newberry died March 21, 2003 at the Wallace Thomson Hospital in Union. Born in Irlam, England she was a daughter of the late Walter and Edith Marsh Vinton. Surviving were her husband, Richard Tankersley of the home; daughters and sons-in law, Lynn and Kenneth Cook of Newberry, Donna and Lonnie Champion of Whitmire; grandsons, S Sgt. Jason Crosby of Camp Kasey, Korea, Kenny Cook of Newberry, John Champion and David Champion, both of Whitmire. Burial was in Whitmire Cemetery. Gray Funeral Home of Whitmire. Tankersley, Ruth “Tootsie” age 72 years old, of Newberry died Jan. 10, 2006 in the Lexington Medical Center. She was born in Whitmire, the daughter of the late H. B. and Lillian Nix Steele. Surviving were her husband, Clyde W. Tankersley, Jr. of the home; daughters and son-in law, June Tankersley, Cornelia Nelson and Darlene and Stanley Wicker, all of Whitmire; one brother, Donald Steele of Whitmire; one sister, Mildred Walker of Chapin. Tarver, James L. 75 years old, of Newberry, died Sept. 15, 2006, at his residence. Mr. Tarver was born in Dothan, Ala., a son of the late Alford D. and Lucille Chancey Tarver. Mr. Tarver was survived by his wife, Bessie Crumpton Tarver; two sons and daughters-in-law, Toby and Helen Tarver of Joanna and Al and Amber Tarver of Newberry; a brother, Johnny Tarver of Dothan, Ala.; six grandchildren, Allen, Andy, Travis, Jesse, Matthew and Joshua Tarver; special niece, Cathy Clinton; special nephew, Rudie Tarver; and a special great-great-nephew, Hunter Clinton. Taylor, Clyde Ramie 78 years old, died April 10, 2004 at his residence. Born in Greenwood, he was a son of the late Joseph Walter Taylor and Sara Louise Allen Taylor. He was a World War II Navy Veteran. Mr. Taylor was survived by his wife, Nell Johnson Taylor; sons, Tracy Taylor of Prosperity and Andy Taylor of Pomaria; sisters, Miriam Shealy of Santee and Betty Schumpert of Newberry; a brother, Jimmy Taylor of Santee; and granddaughters, Jordan Taylor and Maggie Taylor. Taylor, Grace Boozer 77 years old, of Prosperity, died March 18, 2006, at the J.F. Hawkins Health Care Center after a long battle with lung cancer. Mrs. Taylor was born in the Stoney Hill Community of Prosperity, a daughter of the late Clifford C. and Kate Whitman Boozer. She was a 1945 graduate of Stoney Hill High School. Mrs. Taylor was survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Lynn and David Riber; a granddaughter, Seabron Riber; and a grandson, Canton Riber, all of Prosperity. She is also survived by a niece, Judy Miller of Leesville and three nephews, Ed Boozer of Florida, Curt Garnto and Steve Garnto both of Georgia. Burial was at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church Cemetery. Surviving were his wife, Sarah Turner Taylor of the home; one son, Wiliam Jeffery Taylor of Newberry; one daughter, Sandra L. Teague, Bertice McCollum age 89 years, and widow of Gilliam Senn Teague, Sr. died Dec. 19, 2004. She was born in Newberry and was the daughter of the late John Berry and Leila Adams McCollum.  She was survived by three sons, Gilliam S. Teague, Jr. of Greensboro, N.C., John David Teague of Irmo and Willie Senn Teague of Columbia and Mebane, N.C.; one daughter, Bertice T. Robinson of Spartanburg; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; five nephews and one niece. Templin, Amina Darlene Bunkall 75 years old, died Jan. 29, 2005 in Salt Lake City, Utah. She was born June 22, 1929 in Salt Lake City, Utah, the daughter of Thomas and Ada Simons Bunkall. Darlene married Carl A. Templin, her high school sweetheart on June 20, 1949 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She was survived by her sons, Carl R. (Shirley) of Cedar City, Utah, Douglas K. (Debra) of Prosperity, and Ken Templin of Sandy, Utah; daughters, Connie (Mike) Inselsberger of Midvale, Utah, Bonnie (Don) Densley of Sandy, Utah, Carlene (Bill) Opheikens of Midvale, Utah; 21 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; brothers, Tom M. Templin, Carl Alma 73 years old, died July 19, 2004. He was born Dec. 26, 1930 in Castle Dale, Utah to Carl Leon and Flora Madsen Templin. On June 20, 1949 he married Darlene Bunkall in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Carl served for nine years in the U.S. Army Reserves, attaining the rank of Sgt. First Class.  Survivors: wife, Darlene, Midvale; children, Carl Ross (Shirley) Templin, Cedar City; Connie (Mike) Inselsberger, Midvale; Bonnie (Don) Densley, Sandy; Carlene (Bill) Opheikens, Midvale; Douglas (Debra) Templin, Prosperity; Ken Templin, Sandy; 21 grandchildren; nine greatgrandchildren; brothers, Jim (Doris) Templin and Jay Templin; sister, Eva Fields. Thames, Carolyn Fant died Dec. 27, 2004 after a long battle with cancer. She was born in Silverstreet on May 13, 1942, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Maffett Fant, Sr. Mrs. Thames was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Elizabeth DuBose Fant. Thomasson, Frank Scott 77 years old, died May 8, 2004 at his home. Born in Newberry County, a son of the late Andrew Carter and Madena Scott Thomasson. He served his country in the United States Navy during WWII.   Surviving were a daughter and son-in-law, Margaret Lynn and Roy Gerstung; a grandson, Scott Gerstung, all of Batesburg-Leesville; a sister, Genevieve Senn of Silverstreet. Thompson, Katharine Riddle of Chattanooga died Feb. 28, 2005. She was predeceased by Dr. Robert C. Thompson, a well known Chattanooga dermatologist. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Elijah M. Riddle of Shelbyville, Tenn. Survivors included three sons, Robert C. Thompson, Jr. (Linda) of Chattanooga, Tenn.; Dr. John M. Thompson (Carol) of Newberry; and Dr. Joseph R. Thompson (Patricia) of Columbia; one brother, Meredith C. Riddle of Honolulu, Hawaii; one sister, Mrs. John F. Born in Cross Hill, on April 22, 1928, she was the daughter of the late James and Cornelia Jones Dendy. She was valedictorian of the class of 1947 Bell Street High School, Clinton. She was survived by children, Sylvia T. Redfield of North Augusta, Dr. Terry L. Thompson and his wife, Audrey, of Washington, D.C., Michael Thompson of the home, Donald E. Thompson and his wife, Angela of Silverstreet and Jacqueline T. McGowan, and her husband, Joe of Laurens; three sisters, Henrietta Brown of Brooklyn, N.Y., Lenora Pitts of Cross Hill, Annie V. Threatt, Perry C. Sr., 90 years old, widower of Elizabeth White Threatt, formerly of Newberry, died March 10 at White Oak Manor. Mr. Threatt was born on November 16, 1913 in Lancaster, a son of the late W. Yancey and Emma Blackmon Threatt. He was a former member of Newberry Lions Club. He was survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Sandra T. and Peter Garrett of Simpsonville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Perry C. and Jane Threatt, Jr. and Yancey B. "Buddy" and Ann Threatt, both of Newberry; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was the last surviving member of his family. Burial was at Newberry Memorial Gardens. She was the mother of Christina Sunseri with her husband Scott and Amy Wisz and her husband Mathiew all of Discovery Bay, Calif., the daughter of the late Alvin and Beatrice Tinsley and sister·of the late Myrtis Stroud. She was the sister of Carroll, Robert, and Lucille Tinsley of Clinton, Henry Tinsley and Glennie Walker of Kinards, and Edna White of Gaston and a grandmother of Christopher, Michael, Anthony, Angelina and Mikayla, all of Discovery Bay, Calif. Tooley, Andrew Herman Sr., 75 years old, husband of Doris Garrett Tooley, died April 30, 2004 at the Saluda Nursing Home. Born in Greenville County, Sept. 30, 1928, he was a son of the late Rev. John Henry Herman and Addie Mae Black Tooley. Surviving, in addition to his wife of the home, are two sons, A. Herman Tooley, Jr. of Chapin and Frankie Tooley of Greenwood; three daughters, Sue T. Gibson of Rutherfordton, N.C., Vickie T. Turner of Greenwood and Rhonda T. Harris of Rochester, N.Y.; two sisters, Jean T. Bryant of Greenwood and Joyce T. Turner, Ruby Lee Livingston 92 years old, formerly of Newberry, widow of Howard F. Turner, died Sept. 7, 2004 at J.F. Hawkins Healthcare. Mrs. Turner was born on February 7, 1912 in Newberry, a daughter of the late E.H. and Pearl Halfacre Livingston. She was survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Hugh and Linda Turner of Newberry; grandchildren and spouses, Chip and Cari Turner of Ninety Six and Michael Turner and Brandon and Rachael Turner, all of Newberry; great grandchildren, Justin Turner and Shelby Turner, both of Ninety-Six and Amber Turner of Newberry; and a niece, Phyllis Boozer of Newberry. Underwood, James Arthur Dr. Jr. died at his home in Newberry. He was born Oct. 23, 1920 in Greenwood, the son of the late James Arthur Underwood and Annie Mae Brown Underwood. He was also predeceased by a sister, Lula Mae Underwood and a brother, Robert Chesley Underwood. He graduated from United States Naval Academy, Class of 1943 and in World War II was sent to the Pacific Theater of Operations serving aboard by the USS Atlanta during the battle of Guadalcanal. He remained in the Navy until 1949 when he made the decision to enter medical school. In 1946 he married Rosalyn Eva Sanders who survives him. Also surviving are his six children, Patricia U. Laurence of Atlantic Beach, Fla., Nancy Underwood of Newberry, Elizabeth Underwood of Columbia, Jeanne U. Cavanaugh (Mike) of Columbia, James Arthur Underwood, III (Sherry) of Newberry and Julie U. Boland (Charles) of Little Mountain. Surviving grandchildren are Kathryn Cavanaugh and Zachary Michael Cavanaugh of Columbia, James Arthur Underwood, IV ("Jay") and Kelsey Ann Underwood of Newberry, and Benjamin Charles Boland and Laura Elizabeth Boland of Little Mountain. Utley, Anne Bruner Griffith 64 years old, of Hilton Head Island and Prosperity, died Jan. 6, 2006, at her home on Lake Murray. She was born April 4, 1941, to Harriet B. Bruner and the late Robert R. Bruner, Jr. She was survived by her husband of 10 years, John F. Utley and was predeceased by her husband of 30 years, Eugene C. Griffith. She was also survived by her two children, Harriet Leanne Griffith of Columbia and Eugene C. Griffith, Jr. and his wife Beth of Newberry; her two step-children, Barbara U. Johnson and her husband Eric of Lovettesville, MD and John F. Utley, Jr. and his wife Diane of Washington, D.C.; three grandchildren, Cannon Griffith, Geena Griffith and Patrick Griffith; seven step grand children, Leah Utley, Ben Utley, Rachael Johnson, Heather Johnson, Nathan Johnson, Todd Johnson and Bret Johnson; a sister, Betsy B. Taylor and her husband Wallace of Augusta, Ga.; a brother, Robert R. Bruner, III and his wife Dianne of Gulf Breeze, Fla.; an aunt, Betty L. Bruner, of Columbia. Burial was at Rosemont Cemetery. Van Wageningen, Amanda Harris Van Mrs. 90 years old, died Feb. 17, 2005 at Thompson House in Brattleboro, Vt., where she had resided for the past five years. Born May 6, 1914 in Shelby, N.C., she was a daughter of the late William C. and Cleo Whisnant Harris. She was survived by a son, Peter Van Wageningen (Judy) of Brattleboro, Vt.; a daughter, Susan Montgomery (Mac) of Newberry; a brother, Edwin Harris of Shelby, N.C.; three grandchildren, Benton Montgomery, Noelle and Alan Young-Bryant. Vaughn, Bonnie L. 79 years old, formerly of Prosperity, died March 20, 2006, at the Newberry County Memorial Hospital. Ms. Vaughn was born on August 3, 1926, in Prosperity, a daughter of the late Herman W. and Beulah Morris Vaughn. She was a member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church Ms. Vaughn was survived by three sisters, Doris V. Fulmer of Newberry and Mildred V. Amick and Amanda V. Kunkle both of Prosperity; one brother, Lester M. Vaughn of Prosperity; and a sister-in-law, Janette Vaughn. Vereen, Steve W. age 36 years old, died July 14, 2004 at Richland Memorial Hospital. Born in Greenwood, he was the son of Samuel and Mary Vereen of Greenwood. He was a U.S. Air Force Technical Sergeant with 15 years of service. He was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal on four occasions for Meritorious Service. He served as the Deputy Chief Logistics, 20th Civil Engineer Squadron, Shaw AFB. He also proudly served in Desert Storm and the Kosovo Conflict. Surviving were his son, Derek T. Vereen of Newberry; two brothers, Joe Vereen and Benjamin Vereen, both of Greenwood; fiancée, Tammy M. Reum of Columbia; and his son’s mother and close friend, Lee Ann Egleston of Newberry. Vriezelaar, Donald William 61 years old, of  Prosperity, died July 11, 2004 at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital. Mr. Vriezelaar was born on June 20, 1943 in Myrtle Beach, a son of Margaret McRee Hunter Vriezelaar and the late Donald W Vriezelaar. Mr. Vriezelaar retired from the U. S Air Force, with 23 years of service as a Lt. Colonel. He was a graduate of The Citadel, Class of 1965. He was survived by his mother of Prosperity; two daughters and sons-in-law, Cammi and Greg Bell of Mill Valley, Calif. and Jodie and Chris Jeffery of Savannah, Ga.; two sons and daughters-in law, Daren and Laura Vriezelaar of Oak Point, Texas and Job and Jennifer Jeffery of Gaston; a sister, Carrie V. Cole of San Antonio, Texas; and nine grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Carolyn Ruth Henderson Vriezelaar, who died on June 30, 2003. Burial was at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church Cemetery. Vriezelaar, McRee Hunter 87 years old, of  Prosperity, widow of Donald W. Vriezelaar, died Jan. 26, 2005 at White Oak Manor. Mrs. Vriezelaar was born on Dec. 14, 1917 in Newberry County, a daughter of the late Robert Carmichael and Margaret McRee McNeill Hunter. She was survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Carrie V. and David Cole of San Antonio, Texas; five grandchildren; and eight great grand children. She was predeceased by her son, Donald W. Vriezelaar and her brother, Robert Hunter. Burial was at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va. Whitaker Funeral Home was in charge. Newberry Observer 2/4/2005
