Walker, Alice Geddings 62 years old, of Newberry, wife of William D. Walker, died Feb. 4, 2005 at her residence. She was born on Oct. 6, 1942, in Clarendon County, a daughter of the late George Geddings and Patunia Hodge Geddings Dubose. Mrs. Walker was survived by her husband of the home; four daughters and sons-in-law, Wendy and Roger Decker of Sumter, Melissa and J. C. Becker of Woodstock, Ga., Amanda and Scott Carroll of Ft. Hood, Texas, and Katrina and Keith Minick of Newberry; two step-daughters and stepsons-in-law, Bonnie and Mike Muecke of Sioux City, Iowa, Rachelle and Scott Barto of Sgt. Bluff, Iowa; two sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth and Susan Jackson and Ronnie and Lillian Jackson, all of Sumter; a step-son and step-daughter-inlaw, William and Penny Walker of Sail, Iowa; a sister, Carlotte Howell of Sumter; two brothers, Stanley Dubose and Charles Dubose, both of Sumter; 16 grandchildren, one great granddaughter, seven step-grandchildren and one step-great-grandson. Walker, Booker Tallieferio Sr. 93 years old, of Columbia, died 1/29/2006 at his home. Born in Paul Creek, N.C., he was the son of the late James Walker and the late Susan Johnson Walker. His wife, Ruth Richardson Walker, and daughter, Dorothy W. Jordan, preceded him in death. Surviving were one son, Booker T. Walker, Jr. (Carolyn) of Hackensack, N.J.; one daughter, Vivian Elaine Bolton of Newport News, VA. Burial was at Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens. Walker, John Calhoun age 92 years, of Whitmire, died Sept. 29, 2004 in the Wallace Thomson Hospital in Union. He was born in Honea Path and was a son of the late Arthur Henry and Florence Ragsdale Walker. Surviving were his wife, Jennie Caldwell Walker of the home; three sons and a daughter-in-law, John Caldwell and Judy Walker of Hartsville, William (Bill) Walker of San Antonio, Texas and Haskell A. Walker of Melborne, Fla.; one brother, A.H. (Buster) Walker, Jr. of Kinards and a grandson, Pearce Walker of San Antonio, Texas. Burial was in Whitmire Cemetery. Gray Funeral Home, Whitmire. Walker, Leora Hendrix died June 23, 2004. She was born on August 24, 1925, to Eula and Marcus Hendrix in Newberry. Leora was one of ten children. In 1943, she assisted in delivering important telegraph messages to President Roosevelt during the war. She was married to Charles V. Walker from Omaha, Neb for 53 years. Leora was predeceased in death by her husband, Charles; sister, Corinne Merritt; and brother, Clarence Dennis, and survived by daughters, Candice Chase and husband Eric, Cheryl Palmer and husband Bill; son Charles F. Walker and wife Mary; grandchildren, Aaron, Brian, Kevin, Nicole, and Jessica; brothers, Harold Hendrix and Boyd Hendrix; and sisters, Mae Wiehrs, Martha Bowers, Lillian Bouknight, Betty Willingham and Fronie Chaney. Walker, Thomas M. (Buddy) 69 years old, of Johnston SC, died Nov. 19, 2004 at Edgefield Hospital in Edgefield. He was the son of the late Tommy and Della Walker. Surviving were his wife, Linda and two daughters; five grandchildren; sisters, Florence Senn of Newberry and Kay Waldrop of North Augusta. Bland Funeral Home of Johnston was in charge. Walker, William P. “Bill” died Sept. 2, 2006, at Georgetown Memorial Hospital. He was born on Feb. 14, 1919, in Horseheads, NY, the son of Florence Cary and William Joseph Walker. He was survived by his wife of 60 years, Mabel Mary Isaac Walker, his son William P. “Billy” Walker Jr. of Lexington, his wife Amelia and their children Will and Bette Walker; son, Thomas Cary Walker of Mt. Pleasant and his wife Vicki and grandsons Thomas and Matthew Walker; and son, James Cary Walker of Mt. Pleasant and his wife Dina and their children Mary Catherine, Cary and Lawrence. Mr. Walker was predeceased by his son Robert Francis Walker and sisters Virginia Snupik, June Reidy, Florence Compton and Rita Walker. Mr. Walker was also survived by a brother John Joseph “Jack” Walker of Delray Beach, Fla., his wife Helen. During World War II, Mr. Walker was a member of the United States Marine Corps and served as a radio gunner in a torpedo bomber, a TBFAvenger. He flew missions in the South Pacific from various airfields including Henderson Field at Guadalcanal. He also saw extensive action at other sites in the South Pacific including New Zealand and Rabal. He was also a member of a Special Marine Corps detachment at various small atolls in the South Pacific serving with natives and Australians as a behind the lines coast watcher for enemy troop and plane movement. He retired as a Technical Sergeant. After the war he served at the Georgetown Air Base where he met his future bride, Mabel Isaac. Burial was at Elmwood Cemetery with full military honors. Wallace, Joffrey 72 years old, of 1402 Boozer Dairy Road, Chappells, husband of Carolyn Tomaskovic Wallace, died May 25, 2004 at Self Regional Medical Center, Greenwood. Born in Hellier, Ky., he was a son of the late Landon and Lula Fleming Wallace. He was a US Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. Surviving were his wife of the home; two daughters, Luann Justice of Pikeville, Ky. and Halie Boozer of Chappells; four sons, Joey Wallace of Chappells, Keith Wallace of Dallas, Texas, Kevin Wallace of Ivel, Ky. and Joshua Wallace of Greenwood; a sister, Thelma Bartley of Rockhouse, Ky.; three brothers, Earl Wallace of Louisville, Ky., Bobby Wallace of Elkhorn City, Ky. and Teddy Wallace of Hellier, Ky.; and five grandchildren. Wallen, Evan husband of Euna Willis Wallen. died born Aug. 8, 2005. He was born in Blackwater, Va. on Sept. 5, 1909, the son of the late Garfield and Parley Wallen. He was a private in the U.S. Army during World War II. Survived by two sons, E. B. Wallen and wife, Orlean and Eugene Wallen and wife Maxine; two daughters, Leo Bumgardner and husband, Tommy and Bertie Hammond; 11 grandchildren, Leony Hawkins, Stacy Wallen, Dana Wallen, Patty Hammond, Tommy Bumgardner, Jr., Phyllis Hammond, David Hammond, Daniel Hammond, Mike Wallen, Brian Wallen and Mary Ellen Hammond. He was the last surviving sibling, predeceased by five brothers and two sisters, all of Blackwater, Va. He was also predeceased by two grandchildren, Maryann Bumgardner and Cathy Hammond. Wallen, Maxine L. 57 years old, of Newberry died Dec. 22, 2006 at the Spartanburg Regional Hospital. She was born in Whitmire and was a daughter of the late Mack and Faustine Elsmore Lindler. Surviving were her husband, William E. Wallen of the home; two daughters, Stacy Wallen and Dana Wallen, both of Whitmire; two brothers, Jerry Lindler of Arizona and Reggie Lindler of Union; and two sisters, Judy Hipp of Winston Salem, N.C. and Jean Lindler of Whitmire. Gerald Maurice Ward, Jr., husband of Mary Ann Connelly Ward was born Dec. 23, 1935, in Charleston, S.C., the son of the late Gerald Maurice Ward and Sarah Dessima Ackerman Ward. He was survived by his wife of James Island; one daughter, Heather Ann Weed, and her husband, John, of James Island; one son, Gerald M. “Reese” Ward, III, and his wife, Donna, of James Island; one granddaughter, Katie Elizabeth Ward; one sister, Sandra Jean Kinsey of Ocala, Fla.; one brother-in-law, Buford L. Washington, Ola Gladys Mrs. died Sept. 28, 2005, at Moore Regional Hospital. She was born in Pomaria on Sept. 3, 1918, to the late George Marshall and the late Ola Morgan Marshall. Mrs. Washington was predeceased by her husband Jiles "Jay’’ Washington and all of her siblings: brothers, John Henry, George, Leo "Dike,’’ Tommie Lee and Raymond Marshall, and sisters, Mae Frances Berry and Esther Lee Hentz. She was survived by a daughter, Brenda Rogers of Newberry; two sons, Joseph Washington of New York and Bryant Washington of North Carolina; five grandchildren, Donovan Herring of California, Latifa Washington, Yusef Washington and Jamilla Rowe, all of New Jersey, and Kareem Hampton of North Carolina and two great-grandchildren, Jenaya Washington of New Jersey and Kaya Herring of California. Weber, N. Craig 59 years old, died March 7, 2004 at his residence. Born in Vincennes, Ind., he was a son of the late Fred Norman and Hilda Anson Weber. He served his country aboard the nuclear submarines USS John Adams and the USS Henry Clay. He was survived by his wife, Rebecca Shealy Weber; three daughters, Tonya W. Harris of Pomaria and Krystal W. Bates of Pomaria and Tiffany Weber of France and one grandson, Nicholas E. Harris. He was the oldest of seven children, Randy Weber of Florida, Eric Weber, Brad Weber, Jay Weber of Texas, Tara Johnson and Kim Weber of Florida. Burial was at Pomaria Cemetery. She was born in Ninety Six at her home, on Aug. 9, 1914, the daughter of the late Eugene Poole and Mamie Hearst Lipscomb. Surviving were her four children, Joy W. Scurry, of Newberry, Margaret W. "Peggy" Adams and her husband, L.B. Adams Jr., of Greenwood, John Hearst Welborn and his wife, Anna Welborn, of Greenwood, and Lyn W. Lineberger and her husband, Earle Lineberger, of Pawley’s Island; a sister, Bonner Lipscomb Moore, of McColl. Mrs. Wessinger was born on June 29, 1911 in Valdese, N.C., a daughter of the late Lee and Carrie Mitcheum Burns. She was survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Norma W. and Robert M. "Mack" Glymph of Union; a daughter-in-law, Sylvia Wessinger of Kinards; a sister, Annie B. West, James B. “J. B.” 85 years old, of Prosperity, died Sept. 23, 2006, at Saluda Nursing Home. Born in Duneden, Fla., he was a son of the late Horace B. and Ethel Wessinger West. Mr. West retired from the U.S. Army in 1961 having served in the Pacific Theater, and later he retired from the U.S. Civil Service. Surviving were his wife, Docia Miller West; sons, James B. West III of Greer and Horace Samuel West of Prosperity; brothers, Alfred West of Saluda and David West of Florida. Mr. West was predeceased by a daughter, Cheryl Glymph. Whitener, Luke Hayes died Sept. 19, 2004. He was born on Sept. 14, 1927 to the late Arthur and Susie Whitener in Union County, the forth eldest of 21 children. After his father died in 1950, being the eldest child still living at home he assumed the responsibility of the father for the family. He was survived by his wife Demetra; three daughters, Mary McKissick (Lawrence) of Philadelphia, Pa., Patricia Dawkins (Avon) and Hazel Brown (James) of Washington, D.C. A granddaughter that he and Demetra raised as if she was their own, Stacy Dawkins (Donnie). Eight other grandchildren, including Crystal and Lawrence McKissick of Philadelphia, Pa., Jeron, Stephen and Deon Dawkins, Orlando, Darius and Brandon Brown of Washington, D.C.; and five g re a t - g r a n d c h i l d re n , Shaquia, Jayonte, Deja, Jayla and Jamia. Also two brothers, Willie Whitener (Dorothy) of Whitmire and Harold Whitener (Patricia) of Washington, D.C.; four sisters, Hanah Titus of Detroit, Mich., Della McKinney of Greenville, Annie Clark and Geneva Prather (Coley) of Whitmire; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. She was born on March 4, 1931, in Whitehall, Ga., a daughter of the late Judge Hubert and Jessie Ward Thomas. He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran, having served in Europe and was a member of the American Legion Post in Newberry. Holly, N.J., where she was raised and educated. Verna became reunited with her high school sweetheart, Joseph Kenneth Worrell, and on Nov. 23, 1990 the couple was married in Prosperity and moved to the area in 1991. Wright, Harry E. Rev. 78 years old, of Lexington, died Jan. 16, 2005. Born in Rock Hill, he was a son of the late William Albert and Blanche Ballentine Wright. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean Conflict where he received the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Stars.  Survivors included his wife of 52 years, Bernice M. Wright of Lexington; daughters, Brenda W. Hooker of West Columbia and Connie W. Crider of Lexington; son, Charles E. Wright of Irmo; sister, Mary Davis of West Columbia; brother, William "WA’’ A. Wright, Jr., of Cayce; six grandchildren, Brandon, Christopher, and Daryl Hooker, Heather Wright, Olivia and Amanda Crider; three great-grandchildren, Ashley and Chloe Hooker and Hunter Brantley. Wright, Maybelle Kinard 101 years old, of Prosperity, widow of Clayton S. Wright, died May 25, 2005 at the Newberry County Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Wright was born on Nov. 23, 1903 in Pomaria, a daughter of the late Dantzler L. and Mary Alice Koon Kinard. She was a World War I widow. Mrs. Wright was survived by a daughter, Voris W. Bowers of Prosperity; a brother, John Kinard of Chapin; two grand daughters, Barbara B. Morris and Martha B. Waller, both of Prosperity; two great-grandsons, Terry A. Morris and Randel (Ron) S. Abrams, Jr., both of Prosperity; three great-great grandchildren, Michael A. Morris, Elijah D. Abrams, and Olivia Grace Abrams. She was predeceased by two sisters, Mary Bundrick and Lurlene Graham; three brothers, Joe W. Kinard, Colie B. Kinard and Virgil D. Kinard. Interment was in Prosperity Cemetery. Yates, Margaret "Peggy" of Newberry, the widow of Jack Yates, died Nov. 12, 2005, at Lexington Medical Center. Born in Darlington, Mrs. Yates was a daughter of the late Forrest G. and Margaret Sompayrac White. Surviving were two daughters, Stephanie Napier of Gaston and Rande Moolenaar of New Bern, N.C.; grandchildren, Benjamin Lee and Neil Singleton, and two great grandchildren. Mrs. Yokley was predeceased by a brother, Leon Caldwell. Born in Newberry County, she was a daughter of the late Authur Lee Robertson and the late Geneva Smith Robertson. Her husband, Edward Young, Sr., a daughter, Mildred Young, and a son, Edward Young, Jr., preceded her in death. Those surviving include three daughters, Brenda Y. Greene of Tuscaloosa, Ala., Loretta S. Benson and Sandra Palmore of Newberry; two sons, Jerry L. Young of Irmo, and Dean Young of Newberry; seven granddaughters and seven great-grandsons; two sisters, Mattie Davis Tate and husband, Odell, Laura R. Young, Cherish Faith two years and 10 months, died on Aug. 6, 2006 in Cape Town, South Africa. The memorial service and burial were held on Aug. 11. Cherish was born in South Africa on Sept. 30, 2003. Youngner, Daniel Cole Sr., 62 years old, of West Columbia, died July 5, 2004. He was born in Brunswick, Ga. on Sept. 3, 1941, the son of the late Harry Parker Youngner and Lola Cole Youngner. Mr. Younger was survived by his wife of 13 years, Nancy Youngner; daughters, Lisa Faulkenberry and Lori Sargent, both of Atlanta, Ga.; stepdaughter, Elizabeth Crooks Goode of Rutherfordton, N.C.; sons, Stephen Youngner of Charleston, Danny Youngner of Brunswick, Ga.; stepsons, Thomas Crooks of Columbia and James Crooks of Blythewood; sister, Loretta Baldwin of Jacksonville, Fla.; also seven grandchildren and seven step-grandchildren; he was predeceased by sister, Joanie and brother, Buddy Youngner. Youorski, Joseph 88 years old, died March 26, 2005 at Shepherd’s Care in Greenville. He was the widower of Ann Graves Youorski and the son of the late Ignatz and Anna Y. Youroski. He served during WWII as 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Army and was the recipient of the Silver Star. He wasrvived by his six children, Susan Y. and her husband, Howard C. Russell of Missouri, Judy Y. Parker of Madison, Ala., Marian Youorski-Laney of Walterboro, Carol E. Youorski of Avondale Estates, Ga., Mark J. Youorski and his wife, Arlene, of Sugarhill, Ga. and Sarah Y. Weber and her husband, James, of Milner, Ga.; 12 grandchildren, including CPL. Wesley Laney, who is serving in the U.S. Marine Corps on active duty in Iraq; a sister, Kathryn Gilmore of Philadelphia, Pa.; a brother, Nick Youorski of Clifton, N.J.; and a sister-in aw, Patricia G. Skurnowicz of Scranton, Pa. Burial was at Arlington National Cemetery. Newberry Observer 3/30/2005
