Nabors, James C. 83 years old , of Joanna, formerly of Bush River Road, Newberry, died, Dec. 31, 2007 at the Laurens Medical Center. He was born in Newberry County, a son of the late J. J. and Marie McKeown Nabors. He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran of the Korean War and a member of Amity Lodge #87 A.F.M. He was survived by his companion of 40 years, Dewel Proffitt of Joanna; her son and his wife, Gary and Ann Proffitt and their children, Brian and Tina Proffitt and Mark Proffitt, all of Florence. Nail, Cynthia Ann of Boeblingen, Germany died. She was the daughter of Mary Ann Lynch and the late Martin S. Smith. Mrs. Nail was survived by her mother of Newberry, as well as her two sons, Jason Nail of Portland, Ore. and John Nail of Charleston; and two brothers, David Smith of Asheville, N.C. and Allen Smith of Newberry. Nance, Thomas (Tom) 55 years old of Newberry, died at Newberry County Memorial Hospital. Born in Newberry, he was the son of the late Ervin Nance and the late Lucille Caldwell Nance. Surviving were his devoted wife, Geraldine Nance, of the home; two sons, Thomas D. Nance and Michael S. Nance of Newberry; two daughters, Teresa V. Rutherford and La Shaun Nance of Newberry; seven grandchildren; three brothers, Harold E. Nance (Juanita), James Henry Nance (Barbara) and Lewis Nance (Cretia), all of Newberry; mother-in-law, Rosa M. Lindler of Prosperity; two brothers-in-law, Tyrone Lindler and John H. Nance, Thomas 70 years old died 10/12/2009 at Providence Hospital Northeast. Born in Newberry County he was the son of the late Viola Nance. Nanney, Charles Warren 88, died Nov. 22 in Forest City, N.C. Born in 1921, the youngest of 17 half-siblings, he grew up in Union Mills, NC. He enlisted as an aviation cadet in 1941, pursuing what became a lifelong passion for flying. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor that year, he and his beloved Rachel Johnson, of Rutherfordton, eloped on Christmas Day, 1941. As a second lieutenant celestial navigator in the Army Air Corps, Charles served first as an aviation instructor, then as navigator of a B-17 bomber outfitted for air-sea rescue. With the 5th Air Force in the 3rd Emergency Rescue Squadron, he completed 34 missions in the Pacific theater, flying his final mission photographing Hiroshima after its bombing. His daughters were Judith, born in 1946, and Lisa, born in 1951 and Tracy, born in 1957. In 1974, Charles become pastor of First Baptist Church of Newberry, where he ministered until retiring in 1981 after heart bypass surgery. His wife died in 2005 from complications of alzheimer’s disease. Charles remarried; he and his second wife, Grace McCaskill, a lifelong friend to Charles and Rachel, lived at Rolling Green Retirement Community in Greenville until Grace’s death in 2007. Charles Nanney was predeceased by his parents, Albert and Harriet Ellis Byrd Nanney and by his 17 half-siblings. Besides his daughters, he is survived by two grandsons, Adam and Stuart Ginn; four great-grandchildren, Kate, Isabelle and Ava Ginn, and Charles Ginn, all of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and numerous extended family in and around Rutherford County. Neal, Danshaylin of Newberry died Aug. 28, 2007. Born July 2, 2007, she was the daughter of Daniel Neal Sr. and Paula Denethia Hoover. She was predeceased by her paternal grandfather, Raniey Neal. Surviving in addition to her parents are five sisters, Sytoria, Kwonniya, Danielle, all of Prosperity, Quneisha of Union and Shunequa of Newberry; two brothers, Daniel Jr. and Dantrevious; maternal grandparents, Willie and Alethia Sims, all of Prosperity; paternal grandmother, Bertha Neal of Newberry; a devoted aunt, Vernishia Hoover; devoted cousin, Lacenda Davis; devoted friends, Rudean and Yolanda Harris. Nelson, Marion David Sr., age 79, husband of Jewell Baker Nelson of Whitmire, died Aug. 3, 2009 at his home. Mr. Nelson was born in Whitmire, Sept. 1, 1929, a son of the late Robert Andersen Nelson and Annie Wilson Nelson. Mr. Nelson was a Veteran of the U.S. Air Force and retired from the Army National Guard-Union Unit. Surviving were two daughters and two sons: David Nelson Jr. of Taylors, Kay Nelson Dillard of Whitmire, Debbie Nelson Everhart and husband, Tony, of Pacolet and Rusty Nelson of Whitmire; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Elanor N. Ness, Dale Sorlie 63, died Sept. 9, 2009, in Duke University Hospital. Dale was born Feb. 12, 1946, in Bismarck, N.D. He was a graduate of Duke University (AB, 1968) and the University of South Carolina (JD, 1975). Dale served three years in the U.S. Army (1968-1971), during which time he spent a year stationed in South Korea and achieved the rank of First Lieutenant. Dale practiced law in Cincinnati, Ohio, from 1975-1980. In 1980, Dale moved with his family to Columbia, where he worked as a stockbroker. He founded The Ness Company Inc. in 1981. Dale was survived by his wife of 40 years, Jane H. Ness; three children, Kristen N. Ayers (Peter), Sarah A. Ness and Dale S. Ness Jr. (Kerri); one granddaughter, Taylor J. Ayers; two sisters, Charlotte M. Ness and Cheryl E. Ness; and one brother, Peter G. Ness. Dale was preceded in death by his mother, Evelyn S. Ness, and his father, Dale V. Ness. Nichols, Keith Lewis age 57 years old, died Jan. 27, 2008, at Roper Hospital. Graveside funeral services were held on Thursday, Jan. 31, in Charleston at Live Oak Memorial Gardens (Hwy 61) and a memorial service at Lutheran Church of the Redeemer. He was survived by his wife, Elizabeth (Beth) Roddey Nichols, his daughter, Kristen Nichols Voyer (Bryon), and his parents, Lewis and Norma Nichols of Mt. Pleasant. Nichols was born in Newberry, where he earned his Eagle Scout badge in 1965. He graduated from Newberry High School in 1968 and earned degrees in Journalism from the University of South Carolina in 1972 and in Meteorology from Mississippi State in 1994. Nichols, Margaret Bertha 92, died May 31, 2009 at White Oak Manor. Born on Nov. 6, 1916 in Newberry, she was a daughter of the late Andrew Mark and Pearl Schumpert Nichols. Surviving were a sister-in-law, Ruby Nichols; a nephew, Wayne (Delores) Nichols; a niece, Dianne Hall; great-nephews, Tim Nichols and Jason Hall; great-nieces, Christy (Stacy) Ochiltree and Lori Hall; special great-great nieces that she loved dearly, Makayla Nichols and Makenzie Nichols; special friends, Frankie Perry and Mary Alice Sims. Nichols, Paul Willard 91 years old, of Newberry SC died Oct. 28, 2007, at Saluda Nursing Center. Born in Saluda County and a son of the late Bennie Calhoun Nichols and Nina Black Nichols, he was the husband of the late Edith Palmer Nichols. He was first married to the late Elise Bedenbaugh Nichols. Mr. Nichols was a US Army veteran of World War II. Surviving were his son and daughter in-law, David and Susie Nichols of Prosperity; a daughter and son in-law, Karen and Stephen Benz of Palm Bay, Fla.; three brothers, Guy Nichols, Grady Nichols and Jake Nichols, all of Saluda; three sisters, Matilda Freeland of McCormick, Mamie Lee Longshore and Nellie Riley, both of Saluda; and five grandchildren, Brian Benz, Michelle Benz, Kayla Nichols, Miriam Nichols and Adam Nichols. He was a life member of Eastern Star and the Masons and held membership in Masonic Lodge 176. Oxner, Malzetts Moon 85 years old, of Prosperity, died 5/3/2007 at her home. Born in Prosperity, she was the daughter of the late Elliott Moon and the late Vinnie Foster Moon. Her husband, John Oxner, and son, Larry Oxner, preceded her in death. Surviving were one son, Calvin Oxner (Dorothy) of Greenwood; two daughters, Bobbie J. Harp (Johnnie) of Decatur, Ga. and Johnnie M. Bookman of Prosperity; a very devoted friend, Myrtle Sims of Newberry. Burial was in the Antioch Baptist Church cemetery. Oxner, Pearnell 79, of Prosperity, died Feb. 2, 2009 at Newberry County Memorial Hospital. Born in Prosperity, he was a son of the late Waymond Oxner and Mrs. Josephine Owens Praylow. He was a veteran of the Korean War, having served in the U.S. Army. Surviving we his wife, Mrs. Rosa Mary Glasgow Oxner; two sons, Waymond Oxner (Gladys) of Newberry and Johnny M. Oxner (Patricia) of Prosperity; four daughters, Ms. Betty Harvey, Mrs. Barbara Wheeler (Macky), Mrs. Kathy Harmon (Foracene), all of Prosperity, and Mrs. Lisa Hill (Eddie) of Clinton; three brothers, Vernon Oxner of Columbia, Luther Praylow of Newberry and Willie Praylow of Prosperity; four sisters, Mrs. Lue Ella Stoudemire of Prosperity, Mrs. Betty Abney (Willie) of Gilbert, Mrs. Mattie Stephens of Columbia and Mrs. Catherine Taylor of Newberry; two brothers-in-law, Charles Boyd and Elbert Stephens of Prosperity; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Juanita Boyd of Prosperity and Mrs. Elvia Crawford of Washington, DC. Burial was at Mount Moriah A.M.E. Church. Wilson Funeral Home. Newberry Observer 2/4/2009
