Surviving were his stepmother of the home Fannie Mae Hall; three brothers, Rudolph Hall, Ulysses Hall and Bennie Lee Davis all of Newberry; one sister, Christine (Phillip) Davis; one sister-in-law, Mary E. Hall; one stepsister, Hatti Robinson all of Newberry; and one brother-in-law Leroy Miller of Newberry. Haltiwanger, Betty Bowers 80, of Newberry, wife of G. Edward “Ed” Haltiwanger, died July 24, 2012 at Palmetto Health Richland. Born in Little Mountain on Nov. 3, 1931, she was a daughter of Brabham Ewell and Julia Shealy Bowers and was the last surviving member of her immediate family. In addition to her husband of 63 years, she was survived by her daughter, Cathy H. Hart, Marshall Howard 85, native of Mobile, Ala. and widow of Marion H. Hart, died Nov. 17, 2012, at the J. F. Hawkins Nursing Home. Born on July 3, 1927, in Mobile, Ala., she was a daughter of the late Judge Alex T. Howard and Cecile Morrissette Howard. She began serving at the Aveleigh Church in Newberry in September of 1953. During the years prior to her retirement, she served as administrative assistant and D.C.E. of the church. Surviving were sons Robert Howard Hart of Columbus, Ga. and Brett Marion (Macey) Hart of Flower Mound, Texas; granddaughter, Madison Rebecca Hart of Phenix City, Ala.; grandsons, Brett Marion Hart Jr. and Bradley Hayden Hart of Flower Mound, Texas; brothers, Rev. Hawkins, George Robert Sr. of Newberry, died Nov. 30, 2012 at his residence. Born onJuly 27, 1925, in Newberry, he was the son of the late George Pearson Hawkins and Mamie Boozer Hawkins. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hawkins was preceded in death by his wife, Caroline Huffman Hawkins and a son, John Adam Hawkins. Mr. Hawkins was a WW II veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and a 1952 graduate of Clemson University. He was a member and past president of the Newberry Lions Club and a Life Member of Amity Masonic Lodge #87 for over 63 years. Surviving were dear friend, Ms. Frances B. Hazel, Lamar 96, of Newberry, died Jan. 17, 2012, at home among his family. Mr. Hazel was born in Saluda County on July 30, 1915 and moved to Newberry with his family in 1929. He married Grace Marie Close of Okeechobee, Fla. in 1939. Mr. Hazel was a member of the Newberry Masonic Lodge #87 AFM for more than 70 years. Mr. Hazel was survived by his children, Charles Alvin (Loxie) Hazel, Nancy Carole (Mike) Sangaline, Robert Ernest (Barbara) Hazel, Susan Hazel (Dr. Lynn) Derrick, He was predeceased by his wife, Grace, and their two children, Patricia Grace Hazel and Donald Lamar Hazel; parents, Alvin E. and Hannah Merchant Hazel; sister, Matilda Hazel Crooks; and brother, James Edward Hazel. Mr. Hendrix was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He was born on March 13, 1932, in Lexington, and proudly served our nation for 21 years in the U.S. Air Force. Holwell, Charles W. (Sport) Jr., 65, of Quitman, Ga. died Feb. 28, 2012, at his home in Quitman, Ga. He was born Feb. 10, 1947, in Springfield, Mass. to Charles W. Holwell Sr. and Barbara Rawlinson Holwell. Mr. Holwell was a Vietnam veteran (U.S. Navy). He was selected as the New Mexico Male Athlete of the Year and was both a prep and collegiate All-American swimmer. Hudson, Paula 92, died Oct. 26, 2012. She was born in Roscoe, S.D. and raised in St. Peter, Minn. Her father was a Lutheran minister. She was predeceased by her parents, Frederick and Esther Mantevfel; four siblings and her loving husband, Louis Hudson. Huffman, John L. 83, of Otto, N.C., died March 29, 2012. Born in Newberry, he was the son of the late John Lester Huffman Sr. and Rebecca Poole Huffman. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Huffman. John graduated from NewberryHigh School in 1946 and received a degree in vocational agriculture from Clemson University in 1951. He later (1956-59) did graduate work in agronomy and agriculture at Clemson. In 1970, he received his Masters Degree in vocational education and guidance from N.C. State University. During the years 1970-73, he did further post graduate work at NC State, earning a Doctorate of education. John served our country in the U.S. Army during the years 1951-53. He was a member of the Rotary Club, the North Carolina Retired School Personnel, N.C. Nursery Association, American Nursery Association, Georgia Rhododendron Association, IPTAY, NCVA, AVA, NCCLA, NCASA, National Rifle Association, Appalachian Trail Conference and Clemson University Alumni Association. He was survived by his wife of 43 years, Betty Huffman; daughter, Amy Westmoreland and husband, Westy, of Mt. Pleasant; three grandchildren, Anna, Jay and John Westmoreland. Hughes, Ruby Coats 80, of Newberry, widow of John Lawson Hughes, died June 4, 2012. She was born on Aug. 7, 1931, in Newberry County, a daughter of the late James Felton and Mildred Ryals Coats. Mrs. Hughes was survived by her children and spouses, David (Karen) Hughes of Newberry, Billy (Darlena) Hughes of Laurens, and Farrah H. Hunter, Novice Werts 95, widow of Harold Horton Hunter Sr., died Nov. 13, 2012, at White Oak Manor. Born on Nov. 1, 1917, in Silverstreet, she was a daughter of the late Edwin Lewis and Annie Elizabeth Lake Werts. Jackson, Claudie “Marcus” Jr., affectionately known as Marcus, 60, of Irmo, died8/12/2012 at Palmetto Health Baptist Hospital in Columbia. Born in Newberry County, he was the son of the late Claudie Jackson Sr. and the late Emma Dell Martin Jackson. He was a U. S. Army career retiree. His sister, Betty A. Toland, preceded him in death. Jacobs, Ervin Jr. died of cancer on March 19, 2012 at his home. He was the youngest of three children born to the late Ervin Jacobs and Emma Jacobs Ware, Oct. 14, 1929, in Thomasville, N.C. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War from 1951 to 1953. He was survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Pearlie Mae Jacobs, three children, Eugene Jacobs (Felicia) of Simpsonville, Cynthia Lois Tolbert (DeWitt) of Randolph, Mass. and Mary Denise Monroe (Donald) of Huntsville, Ala.; six grandchildren, Tyniqua, Donald III (Allyson), Imani, NiKeya, Devon, Dionne and two great-grandchildren ZeShaun and Jaden, also survive him. Mr. Jones was a Vietnam veteran and a life time member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
