phys. to the Newberry poorhouse.
pg. 694 Eli Geddings, S.C., was born in Newberry dist., S.C. in 1799. Having received an ordinary education and studied medicine, he was licensed in 1820 by an examining board to practice medicine. In the winter of 1821-22 he attended lectures in the med. dep't of the univ. of Pa., and during 1824 removed to Charleston, where, in 1825, he received the first degree conferred by the med. coll. of S.C. Subsequently he spent a year in medical study abroad, and on his return to Charleston was appointed demons. of anat. in the med. coll. of S.C. Afterwards he was called successively to the chairs of anatomy and physiology, of surgery, and of the theory and practice of medicine. Subsequently he served as prof. in the univ. of Md. and New York city for a short time and resigned. Other professorial positions were tendered him, but he preferred returning to the univ. of S.C. where he resumed the duties of prof. of surgery, which he still continues to discharge. pg. 434 John Lake, Edgefield, S.C. was born in Newberry co., S.C., April 28th 1809. He is a son of Joseph and Jane Lake, of Maryland descent. He received a good academical education at the high school of Cokesbury, S.C., and graduated in medicine from the univ. of Pa., in 1831. He settled in Edgefield, and has practiced there since his graduation. He has had an extensive practice, especially in midwifery, in which he has attended over one thousand cases. He is a member of the Edgefield med. soc., of which he was president for three consecutive years, and of the med. asso. of S.C., of which he was vice-president in 1873. He has been a contributor of the Augusta Medical Journal, edited by Prof. Paul Eve, and also the Charleston Medical Journal. In 1848 he was elected to the legislature by the largest vote ever cast in the county; and two years later, without solicitation on his part, was elected to the convention called for the purpose of declaring the secession of the State, a purpose not carried out until ten years afterwards. he was married, Sept. 15th, 1833, to Sophia A. Blocker, and has two sons and three daughters. pg. 417 Orlando Benedict Mayer, Jr., Newberry, S.C., born in Newberry, S.C., Aug. 23d, 1853, graduated from the S.C. med. coll., March 1874 and settled in Newberry in active general practice, but giving preference to surgery. He is a ember of the Newberry med. soc., has been both its secretary and treasurer; and a member of the S.C. med. asso. He is phys. to the Newberry poorhouse. (see short sketch on O. B. Mayer SR.) pg. 252 James McIntosh, Newberry, S.C., of Scotch descent, was born at Society Hill, Darlington Co., S.C., Feb. 27th, 1838. Educated at the S.C. Col., and at the med. Coll. of the State of S.C., he was graduated M.D. from the latter institution in March, 1861. In June 1865, he established himself at Newberry, engaging in a general practice, but paying especial attention to the treatment of diseases of women and children. He is a member of the S.C. med. asso., and was president of that body from April, 1874 to April, 1876. Of his published writings may be mentioned: "Dysmenorrhoea: its treatment with Quinine and D?t. Stramonium," Transactions S. C. Med. ass., 1872; "Cerebro-Spinal Meningitis," ibid, 1873; Ergot: its Hypodermic Use in Controlling Hemorrhage," ibid, 1875. In 1861 he enlisted in the 8th S.C. Reg., and served during the summer campaign, taking part in the first battle at Manassas Junction. In Oct., 1861, he was commissioned ass't. surg., Confederate States army, and in this capacity served during the entire war, being assigned to duty in the hosp. at Charlottesville, Va., until 1865, when he was ordered south and charged with the establishment of a hospital at Newberry. He married, Nov. 25th, 1862, Frances Caldwell, daughter of Francis B. Higgins, Esq., of Newberry. |
