Commencement Exercises Are Held at Prosperity

Prosperity, June 6 – The annual commencement of the Prosperity high school began on May 15, when Mrs. James D. Quattlebaum's music class gave the public a rare treat in their recital. The pupils showed marked evidences of careful and thorough training, and reflected credit upon themselves, as well as their teachers. On May 31 the Rev. C. A. Freed of Columbia preached the commencement sermon in the Grace Lutheran church. His thoughts and ideas were very appropriate, and forcibly delivered.

On Monday night, June 1, the annual contest in declamation was held. This was for a medal given by col. L. H. Hunt of Newberry to the boy of the high school who delivers the best declamation. Five boys took part, and the contest would have been a credit to any college. The judges gave their decision to Price Harmon. On Tuesday morning at 11 o'clock Dr. E. Pendleton Jones of Newberry addressed the class of 1914.

Tuesday night five girls of the high school contested for the Wheeler expression medal, given by W. W. Wheeler, president of the Peoples' National bank. The young ladies performed their parts admirably and the result was in doubt until the judges announced that Miss Ruby Wheeler had won, with Miss Katie May Nance as a close second.

Wednesday evening the class exercises were held and diplomas delivered. The members selected to take part acquitted themselves well. There was a poet, a prophet, a salutatorian and a valedictorian, and the exercises were appreciated as evidenced by the applause which greeted each one. J. S. Wheeler delivered diplomas to the following members of the class of 1914: Annie May Conwill, Wyche Dickert, Bessie Lee Gibson, Maude Lucinda Harmon, Price Kenneth Harmon, Mary DeWalt Hunter, Susie Frances Langford, Katie May Nance, Henry Langford Quattlebaum, Alvin Arthur Singley, Berley Liberty Taylor, Nancy Erwin Wheeler, Ruby Wheeler, Verne Wheeler, Marguerite Wise.

The following medals and prizes were also awarded: Primary prize, Francis May; third grad prize, Bernice Merchant; honorable mention, Grace Wheeler; fourth and fifth grade medal, given by R. C. Counts of Columbia, Grady Bedenbaugh; honorable mention, Jo Langford; sixth and seventh grade medal, given by Dr. J. S. Wheeler, was awarded to Pickens Langford; Honorable mention, Nellie Wise; high school mathematical medal, given by Dr. O. B. Simpson, was won by Miss Moss Fellers, with honorable mention to Miss Josephine May.

Aull of Newberry, was won by Miss Ruth Wheeler, honorable mention of Miss Mary DeWalt Hunter. The scholarship in Newberry college was won by Price Harmon.
