St. John's Lutheran Church

St. John's Lutheran Church was organized in 1754 by the Reverend John Gasser as a Reformed Church and is the oldest congregation to this day in Newberry County. It later became Lutheran and has been such for more than two centuries. The first log church was replaced by another log building that later was replaced by the famous "White Church" in 1809. The latter still stands as the oldest frame Lutheran Church in South Carolina and was the special pride of the late W. D. Summer, Sr. - he left quit a sum of money for its upkeep.

In 1950 a modern brick church was erected across the road from the "White Church". A new parsonage was erected in 1956 and a parish education building was constructed in 1967.

The church supports a cemetery.
