St.St.
Lukes is the largest rural Lutheran
church in South Carolina. It's been stated that it was organized in 1828 by Rev. J. G. Schwartz (a brilliant young
Lutheran divine) but research has shown that the Rev. John D. Scheck was the founder (see St Luke History). John Enlow, one of the charter members, gave the land on which the present or fourth
church stands (John Enlow to Frederick Shumpert and Henry Bedenbaugh, Elders. 3 acres for a Lutheran Church (site
of all 3 churches), 6 December 1828. Book CC, page 20.
Jacob Hawkins to Colony, Newville and St. Luke's. 12% acres. 29 July 1872. Book SS, page 173.). It was completed
in 1955 and the parsonage was built in 1962. Other pastors include: Berly, Moser Hope, Boinest Hawkins, Wingard
Bowles and Epting.
St. Luke's has given the
followings sons to the ministry: S. R. Shepard, Levi Bedenbaugh, Wilson Bedenbaugh, J. S. Elmore, Jacob Hawkins,
I. P. Hawkins, Z. W. Bedenbaugh, C. P. Boozer, W. E. Pugh, P. E. Shealy, J. A. Shealy, Clyde Bedenbaugh, Vernon
Frick, Larry W. Smith, and Gerald Whitman Smith.
A Book of Records dating 1832 was transcribed and placed in the SCMAR Vol. II 1974, Spring/Summer.
A cemetery is close by. The oldest section of the
cemetery is adjacent to the church and the largest section is across the road.
