Wiseman Hotel Newberry, Newberry County, South Carolina

The Old Wiseman Hotel, later known as the Newberry Hotel, sits across the street from the Old Courthouse on the Town Square. photo courtesy of Larry Jennings, August 2009 After the fire of 1877, the town of Newberry began rebuilding and J. P. Pool and O. L. Schumpert (his son-in-law) hired an architect (G. L. Norman) in 1879 to design a hotel.  The hotel was located at 1112 Caldwell Street, across from the, (then) courthouse and was leased by A. W. T. Simmons.    Dr. Gilder and Weeks Drugstore occupied the corner street level retail space at that time.
