George Washington Price

Martha Caroline Duke Price

GEORGE WASHINGTON PRICE

George Washington Price, was the son of James Thornton Price and Minerva Jane Tankersley. He was born 02- January 1862, very shortly after his family moved from Gilmer County to Blountsville, Blount County, Alabama. He married Martha Caroline Duke 21 Jan-uary 1900, in Cullman County, Alabama. He followed the footsteps of his father, James Thornton Price, becoming a farmer. The old James Price Farm still remains in the family of George Washington Price to date. They hold a reunion each year and folks come from many miles to attend and honor those long gone on.

Issue of George and Martha Duke Price were: William Thornton, born 05 November 1900, died 23 July 1932. Thelma, born 17 November 1901, died 24 July 1901. Georgia Minerva, born 12 November 1902, died 23 February 1979. Athens, born 22 October 1903, died 01 April 1904. Mary Jewel, born 29 May 1905. Sercy Washington, born 09 March 1907, died 09 October 1959. Alice Ester, Born 01 March 1908. Obert Duke, born 03 Jun 1909. died 20 July 1970. Elbert James, born 06 July 1911, died 10 March 1969. Eleanor Caroline, born 26 November 1913. Noah Aron, born 10 June 1914. Many of their ancestors were in Gilmer very early 1800's. This fine family is still being researched to date. I was fortunate enough to visit Ellijay the year 1985. I was in awe as I walked the land my ancestors walked. It is with great pride I proudly submit this. Minerva Jane Tankersley & James Thornton Price

JAMES THORNTON PRICE FAMILY

James Thornton Price came into Gilmer County, Georgia about the year 1840. He was born 11 April 1825 in South Carolina. Parents at this date are not known. We feel he came into Gilmer County with his parents and siblings. This has not been proven to date. He met and married a daughter of a very prominent family, Minerva Jane Tankersley. Minerva Jane was born 01 January 1822 in Gilmer County. They were married in Gilmer County the 15th day of August 1844.

The issue of James Thornton and Minerva Jane were: Nancy Catherine, born 21 November 1845. Mary Frances, born 31 December 1847. Julia Caroline, born 18 March 1850. Sarah Minerva, born 16 May 1852. Martha Miranda, born 07 July 1854. Sometime shortly after the birth of this child James and Minerva left the rugged mountains red clayed terrain of Gilmer County, moving to Blountsville, Blount County, Alabama. William Henry, born 14 September 1856. James Floyd, born 03 July 1859. George Washington, born 02 January 1862. Last three children born in Blount County, Alabama.

James Thornton Price died 06 August 1903 in Blountsville. Blount County, Alabama. Minerva Jane Tankersley, Price died 21 March 1894 in Blount County. Both were laid to rest in the Mt. Hope Cemetery, located in Blountsville, Alabama, on the Garden City Highway. The Cemetery is located in Zadie Moore's pasture land. Our "Mountain Man", James Thornton Price resting high on a hill, close to the sunsets and sunrises he so dearly loved. In consecrated moments. Their harness still thrown over the urges of the world bridled now and tamed; They gallop through our memory and beyond. Submitted by: Jacqueline Louise Nero, 90 Aladdin, Lumberton, TX 77657.

JOSEPH AND SARAH (PRICE) THOMPSON
My Thompson ancestors are a real mystery - they appear in Gilmer County in the 1850 and 1860 census and then vanish. Joseph Thomp-son's age was shown as 35 in the 1850 census and age 50 in the 1860 census; both have him born in South Carolina. Sarah Price was born in 1817, also in South Carolina. (Cicumstantial evidence convinces me she is the daughter of William and Price and Nancy Downs). They married in 1842 in Gilmer County according to their marriage license dated May 5th of that year. They had 10 children: Mary I. (1844), Nancy A. (1845), Elizabeth (1847). Caroline (1848), Josephus (Mar 1850), Benjamin (1852), Willam (1853), Sarah (1856), Rutha (1858), and my great grandfather John J. (1861). Though I have nothing that shows John J. Thompson with his parents and siblings, I have proof of parentage in John's 1883 Hamilton County Indiana marriage application naming John Thomp-son and Sarah Price as his parents.

I've not been able to find them in the 1870 census. Since there are several states to which they could possibly have gone, it will take a long time to go through all the hundreds of counties. I have looked in all the surrounding counties without luck. According to the 1850 census, Joseph had $100 in real estate, but I've found no land record to back this up. I suspect that the census taker meant to put the figure in the personal property column. One interesting record I have found was the poor school record of 1858 Gilmer County. Six of the children are on this record, and the wonderful things is that the lists are in militia district order. Since the 1850 and 1860 census did not have township breakdowns, knowing their militia district was 1009 (Tails Creek District) tells me where in the county they lived (if the county were a clock, they lived between 9 and 10 o'clock).

There has been no provable connection to other Thompson's in the area. I've talked with researchers of the Samuel J. Thompson and Sarah Carter family (married 1810 in Bunscomb Co. NC), and we've mutually concluded that there is no connection between these families. One possibility of a connection is a family shown in the 1850 census consisting of John Thompson (age 47 born SC, having in the household persons ranging from age 24 (born SC) down to age 1 (born GA), and including Elizabeth age 87 (born SC). My theory is that Elizabeth is the mother of John and he is the father of the rest in the family, with John's wife dying of childbirth with the 1 year old. Could John be a brother to my Joseph? Making Elizabeth my Joseph's mother.?

If anyone can shed light on where this family came from, and/or where they went, I would be forever grateful. Submitted by: Kathryn (Rhinehart) Bassett, 1080N. Holliston Ave., Pasadena, CA 91104-3014
