I don't know what county but I believe that my g.g.g.grandfather Clemuel Lawson was born in South Carolina abt. 1800 he married Elizabeth Wilson in KY and then moved to Tenn., Illinois, and finally settled in Maries County, Missouri.  Any information at all would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you, Kim  (posted 10/18/2008)

My cousin's oral family history says that our ancestors, the Peaks or Peeks, were Scots-Irish that migrated from Ulster to Charleston about 1730.  I have identified the David Peek family in Antrim, Ulster that included sons John (b 1707) and Robert (b 1709).  My ancestor, John Peak Sr. was in Prince Edward County, VA before 1750 and there was also a family of a Robert Peak there as well.  I am trying to tie the Irish Peeks and the VA Peaks together.  South Carolina would appear to be the bridge.  So I am looking for any signs of immigration or residence on the part of the Peek/Peak families in South Carolina in the 1730/1740 time frame.  Can anyone help me?

My mother is a descendant of the Culpepper line. Her great ,great Grandfather, John William Culpepper was born October 1772 in Richland Dist. S.C. He married Nancy Gillespie b. 1778 .  Nancy was the daughter of Francis Gillespie and Elizabeth Peek.  Another Query dealt with the Peek line. I do not have more on them but the districts might help. Nancy was born in St. David’s Parish  In 1778.
They were in S.Carolina still for the birth of my mother’s Great Grandfather, William Henry Culpepper b. Oct 17, 1813 . This would apparently be Lexington Dist. As they were in Lexington Dist for the birth of their second son, Joel Culpepper in 1795. Joel remained in S.Carolina until his death in 1836.  John Jefferson Culpepper was born November 4, 1797 in Orangeburg Dist. S.C.  Daniel Peek Culpepper was born in 1800 but I do not know the location.  Other children were born but I do not know their location for proof.  One other son was born who was named Lewis Peek so the name Peek was used twice.
I am hoping to learn more about the parents of John William Culpepper b. 1772.   I am fond of the “Culpepper Connections “ Web site and John b. 1772 May be the son of a John who had brothers named , Benjamin and Joseph.  John William b. 1772 may have been orphaned as a boy and lived for a time with his Uncle Joseph.  I would just like to know more.  I am certainly open to suggestions.  Tommies Smith   (posted 7/25/2009)

Trying to find a man named Henry Bollinger who was from Switzerland who took  advantage of the offer of land in South Carolina.  I believe that he settled in Pendleton, which I understand is now Anderson, Abbeville, and Pickens.  I am under the impression that the time frame is between 1760 and 1770.  His son arrived in PA with his wife and children later.  The son died in 1770 and I have found his children in Pendleton SC.  Apparently the grandparents raised the children. Searching for origins and parentage of Nelson Conner, born somewhere in SC in 1818. He was a Methodist Episcopal minister with assignments in GA-FL-TX.  Rev. Nelson Conner married Margaret Elizabeth Booth in Ware Co., GA on Nov. 1, 1848. Margaret was born about 1829 in Prince Williams Parish, South Carolina.  Children were Mary, Laura, Jesse Nelson and Sidney Booth Conner.
There may be an earlier connection between the Booth and Conner families. Margaret's father, Jesse R. Booth was also a Methodist Episcopal minister. Nelson Conner died in 1871 in Live Oak, FL at the age of 53. He may have had a brother named John Henry Conner.  The names Thomas Conner, abt 1838, SC, and Miranda Conner, abt 1834, SC, are related to Nelson Conner. Thomas was listed in the 1860 Valdosta, Lowndes, GA census as a blacksmith, age 22, in the household of Nelson Conner. Miranda was listed in the Ware Co., GA 1850 census as a resident in the Jesse R. Booth household. Robert Perry (posted 6/27/2010.

Brown Family Tree - Looking for any connections with these names. Specifically the parents of Josh Washington Brown B. Jul 28 1858 (Married Susan Jane Lewis). I have found a census for 1860 that lists his parents as William Brown B.1830 and Amelia b. 1840 but can find not listing after this. Of all the research I have done, I believe that Amelia's maiden name is Rivers and her mother was Mariah Rivers. I am also looking for Josh's siblings. I did find an obituary that listed his siblings that were still alive at his death (in 1950) and the girls are listed with married names but no husband's names are mentioned. As far as I can tell there are at least 3 boys and 4 girls.
I am looking for decendants of Josh Washington & Susan Jane Lewis Brown. I have put together an extensive family tree but some of their children are a bit of a mystery. Interested in any information of Sophie E. McAlpin - mulatto.  She was born in Georgia - possibly the Savannah area.  I believe she takes her name from Scotsman Henry McAlpin of the Hermitage plantation.  He lived in Charleston as well.  She may be related to Daniel D. McAlpin also of Charleston.  Daniel stated that Minty Drayton was his mother and Amarintha Drayton is found living with Sophie at one point.
I believe she had a relationship with R.M. Owings of Laurens County and later Hamburg.  He was a slave trader in the 1850's.  Sophie had Mary Owings in 1856 and Richard M. Owings in 1861.  Owings had offices in New Orleans, Hamburg, Richmond and Charleston and was partners with Judge Abner Phair Robertson and Ziba B. Oakes.
For some unknown reason Sophie used the title of "Madame" - on some census she is listed as having no occupation and elsewhere stated to be a seamstress.
A brief chronology follows:
1856 - December 12 - Richard  M. Owings tells Ziba B. Oakes (1806-1871), his Charleston slave supplier that he was "at all times" interested in buying "all likely and handsome fancy girls"..."if they can be got at reasonable prices".  Owings & Company 9 Chalmers Street, Charleston (opposite slave mart).
1857 - March 23 - RMO to Ziba B. Oakes (Charleston): "Can you sell some good negroes in your market?  Is there any buyers and at what are they paying?  It may be I will ship you some down."
1861 - Charleston Census - Sophie McAlpin not listed as f.p.c..  Nancy Nowell f.p.c. 4 Wilson St.
1878 - Madame Sophia E. McAlpin 141 Market St. Charleston.
1879 - Sophia - no listing.  Henry Owings b. to Mary Owings, Sophie's grandson - Charleston
1880 - Sophia McAlpin age 37 (sb 40), Mary Owings age 20 (sb 24) - 141 Market, St. Charleston.
1881 - Madame Sophia E. McAlpin 141 Market St., Charleston.
1882 - Madame Sophie A. McAlpin 141 Market St..
1883 - Madame Sophia E. McAlpin 120 Market Street.
1884 - Miss Mary Owings (age 28) 120 Market St. Charleston.  Henry age 4. Madame M.C. McAlpin 120 Market St. Charleston.
1886 - Madame Sophia McAlpin 152 Market St. Charleston.
1887 - No listing.
1888 - Madame S. McAlpin 10 Clifford St., Charleston.
1889 - S.E. McAlpin 155 Market St.  Died June 15, Sophie McAlpin - seamstress  tuberculosis 12 Horlbeck Alley, Charleston, SC - age 49.  McAlister Funeral Home (white). posted 2/8/2010 by David Owings

There are only four Schleich families left in Weisloch, Germany where Hans Schleich came from.
