W. Preston Bookter
W. Preston Bookter
, one of the most prominent farmers of Richland county, died suddenly yesterday at his home at Eau Claire.  Mr. Bookter had not been in robust health for a year, but his family did not suspect that his condition was so grave as it was.
Feeling quite unwell yesterday morning, Mr. Bookter went out to get his horse to ride into the city to consult a physician.  He became very ill and called to a Negro laborer to come and catch him.  When carried to the well house, he sat down and it was seen that he was in extremis.  Before he could be taken to his room, Mr. Bookter was dead.
The deceased was a native of Richland county, and was 65 years of age.  His father, Preston Bookter, was a man of means, having a large plantation nine miles northwest of Columbia on Broad river.
W. P. Bookter is said to have been the youngest soldier in regular service in the Confederate army.  He volunteered at the beginning, but was sent home, and went in again as soon as he could be accepted.  He was a member of the Twelfth South Carolina regiment, which had six colonels, three of whom were killed and two disabled.  His own brother, col. Edwin T. Bookter, was killed while leading a charge.

The deceased was the last of the large Bookter family, and is survived by his wife and three children.  Mrs. Bookter was Miss Sallie Davis of Fairfield.  The sons are:  Edwin F., recently elected to the legislature; W. P., Jr., and John Davis Bookter.  The only daughter is Miss Elizabeth Martin Bookter.

Mr. Bookter moved from his farm to Eau Claire a few years ago and has been a useful citizen of that community.  He served Richland county as a member of the board of county commissioners.

The funeral will be held today at 3:30 o'clock, at the home at Eau Claire, the interment being at Elmwood.  The honorary pallbearers will be:  T. H. Gibbes, W. G. Childs, J. Edgar Poag, Charles Ellis, Edward Ehrilch, D. C. Ray, W. J. Cathcart.  The active pallbearers will be:  T. B. Aughtry, Geo. L. Baker, M. C. Robertson, J. B. Dukes, J. Frost Walker and Jno. D. Frost.
