Trinity Episcopal Church COLUMBIA
One of South Carolina's most beautiful houses of
worship is Trinity Episcopal Church, 1100 Sumter Street, in
Columbia. It is of English Gothic style with arched oak doors, capped
by twin towers, each supporting eight pinnacles. It was
designed by Edward Brickell White in 1840.
The parish was organized
in 1812, and a frame building erected in 1814. This was
cruciform in shape, and was built on the northwest
corner of Smythe
lot. The present edifice was erected in
1846.
Most of the exquisite stained glass windows,
including the rose windows, are originals from Munich, and
were gifts from the Preston family, who also gave the marble baptismal
font, which was designed by Hiram Powers.
The cemetery
adjoining the church is the last resting place of Wade
Hampton, South Carolina's greatest soldier; Henry Timrod, Dr.
Thomas Cooper, five governors
of South Carolina, two Revolutionary officers, three
Confederate generals, and other noted men. This graveyard is beautifully kept and is
especially lovely in the spring when the many flowers are in
bloom.
