Wife of B. A. Hinnant Passes at Resident
John T. Gaston, probate judge of Richland county, and well known throughout South Carolina, died suddenly yesterday while seated in his office at the court house. The cause of death was heart trouble. He had been in ill health for more than a year and at frequent intervals had been forced to remain at his home, near Colonial Heights. Judge Gaston had been a resident of Columbia for 15 years. He was stricken shortly afternoon. The funeral arrangements will be announced later.
He was great sachem of the order of Red Men for South Carolina. Last year he and Mrs. Gaston enjoyed an extended trip West, visiting the home of Mrs. Gaston's sister and returning by the way of Toledo, Ohio, where he attended, as a State delegate, the grand council of the order.
The following children, together with his wife, Mrs. Sarah A. Gaston, survive: Miss Allie Gaston of Columbia, Mrs. W. H. Sandifer of Denmark, William H. Gaston of Columbia, John H. Gaston of Columbia, James W. Gaston of Augusta, Mrs. W. S. Sayden, of Memphis, Tenn., Mrs. F. T. Dupont of Savannah, Ga., and Mrs. C. L. Magalis of Waycross, Ga.
John T. Gaston was born in Edgefield district in August, 1841. He was the son of William Gaston and Elizabeth Sawyer Gaston, his father coming from Fishing Creek, Chester district. Mr. Gaston went to the Arsenal school in Columbia, and in 1869 married Miss Sarah Anne Weathersbee from Barnwell. He took a prominent part in the election of Hampton in 1876 to 1880, served as probate judge for 12 years in Aiken county, and held a similar position in Richland county at the time of death, succeeding W. H. Cobb, who was elected solicitor. (The State - April 2, 1911)Mrs. Bessie Elizabeth Hinnant, wife of B. A. Hinnant, died at the residence, 2023 Gadsden street, yesterday morning at 8:30 o'clock.
Mrs. Hinnant, who was 23 years old at the time of her death, having been born May 21, 1898, was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Kinard Epps, formerly of Newberry. She was married to Mr. Hinnant in December, 1915.
She is survived by her husband, B. A. Hinnant, her mother, Mrs. J. K. Epps, two sisters, Mrs. T. E. McCullough of Columbia and Mrs. J. M. Morris of Newberry, also two brothers, W. E. Eps of Newberry and Hugh K. Epps of Atlanta.
Mrs. Hinnant was a member of the Backman chapel, Lutheran church, Newberry.
The funeral services will be held this afternoon at 4 o'clock from the residence, 2023 Gadsden street, and will be conducted by the Rev. H. A. McCullough. Interment will be in Elmwood cemetery.
Mr. Hinnant is employed by M. B. DuPre company. The following have been requested to act as pallbearers: A. G. Fisher, W. M. Mobley, T. A. Heise, Grover Kirby, B. M. Rodgers and M. B. DuPre. (The State September 16, 1921)
