Richland County, South Carolina is proud of its military heritage. It has served as home to some of the greatest war heroes from the county's inception, beginning with Colonel Thomas Taylor and the first General Wade Hampton who both served in the war for American independence.

The United States Army  is strong in that Fort Jackson, named after South Carolina's only native to serve as President, is the largest Army training base in the current U. S. Army.

McEntire Air National Guard Base near Eastover, has produced many 'Top Gun' award winners in fighter competitions and has played vital roles in Operation Desert Storm and the present Afghanistan and Iraqi conflicts.

Many of the streets in the City of Columbia are named after Revolutionary War Generals. You will find streets named after Thomas Sumter, Francis Marion, Nathaniel Greene, Wade Hampton, and others.
