Bad Nation District No. 19
                                   by JoAnn Harvey
(transcribed from the Mellette County 1911-1961 book, published August 15, 1961 by the Mellette County Centennial Committee)

The first school was held in a shack northeast of Wally Eklunds. The Peacock children, Emma Satree and Kidwilers  ..     .                         attended and were taught by Mrs. Ritts.
Seeing the need for schools, the settlers built three new school houses in about 1915. One of the first teachers was
Mildred Kemp, a homesteader. These three schools had large enrollments. Some of the first pupils were the Carl Wilsons, the Jonescheit and the Satree children.
These three schools still belonged in Wood District No.1, but later became Bad Nation No. 19.
In 1925 and 1926 Mildred Bennett was a teacher in one of these schools. She now teaches the seventh and eighth grades in Wood. Anna Durrin and Theresa Cordes taught the other two.
Gradually the attendance decreased; the Peacock school was closed in the 30's, the Earl Brown school closed in the 40's. The third school was moved from its location, down by the springs, to its present location across the road from the Glen Sherwood Ranch. This school has been improved by lowering the ceiling and putting inlaid linoleum on the floor . It also has a fine library of text books.
Today only five children attend school in Bad Nation District. They are Debby Wilton, Robert and Bonnie Koskan; and Melody and Justin Sherwood.
