Amos L. Bennett and Alberta Harter were married February 20, 1895. Amos was born May 30, 1871, died 1950. Alberta was born February 21, 1877, died in 1956. To this union was born four daughters and one son. Vera Fay was born January 22, 1896, died in 1900. Josephine M. (Robinson) born October 12, 1896 is presently living in Winner, South Dakota. Velma Erma (Foster), Faith, South Dakota, was born June 20, 1902. Ruby Harriet (Williams) was born January 1904, died October of 1977. Marvin Amos was born August 12, 1910, died in 1928.
The Bennetts lived near Naper, Nebraska, before moving to a claim in southern Gregory County. After "proving up," they moved to Gregory. Amos purchased a Midland car. It was one of three cars in Gregory at that time. He established regular customers, especially salesmen, who were selling merchandise to country stores in Gregory, Tripp and Mellette County. The salesmen found it faster and more convenient to travel by car and have a guide, than traveling by team and buggy.
At this time Gregory was the end of the railroad. Thousands of people came to register for claims in the western counties. Bennett's daughter Josephine Robinson remembers watching from the school house. There were long lines of settlers walking the 3/4 mile from the depot to the building that is now the Kroner Lumber Co. These people registered, then had to walk back to the depot to go back to their homes in the east.
Later, when the people who drew lucky numbers came back to Gregory and Dallas on the train, they needed transportation to Mellette County, and someone that was acquainted with the area, to help them choose a location. It was then that Amos enjoyed a pleasant and lucrative livery business helping these settlers find a suitable location. Amos soon knew every section of land in Mellette County. The livery business grew less as the Model T Fords began to appear and people had their own transportation. The Bennett family moved back to their farm in southern Gregory County. The girls grew up, either married or were attending school or teaching.
Amos and Alberta decided to try their luck in Mellette County in 1924. They chose a place about three miles south of the Chamberlain Ranch, near the Black School. They didn't have room in their house for their beautiful upright organ so they stored it in the school house and gave the school permission to use it. The school and the organ burned down.
The ladies of the community met in the Bennett home and organized one of the early extension clubs. Their daughter Ruby taught the Butterfield School.
In September 1928, their son Marvin was killed when his horse slipped in the wet cow lot and fell. The boy lived only a few hours.
Mr. Bennett needed help with his farm and dairy work so his daughter and her husband, Fletcher and Josephine Robinson, spent the next year at this location. The Robinsons moved back to Gregory in 1930.
The Bennetts moved to Witten, South Dakota in 1931, where they spent their remaining years. They lived on the edge of Witten and operated a successful dairy business.
