Lottie Raisch
(Transcribed, with permission from the Mellette County Historical Society, from "Mellette County 1911-1961" published by the Mellette County Centennial Committee)

Two spotted ponies pulling a top buggy with a skilled, cheery practical nurse in the driver's seat was a common sight to the sick and needy Indian and white families in the Blackpipe district from 1910 to 1928.
This good will emissary, Lottie Raisch, came to Norris as a field matron for the Indian service, after acting as matron at the Genoa, Nebraska, Indian school and serving in the Indian department in New Mexico and Montana. Along with her optimistic words of expert advice for the distressed she brought a good supply of Castor Oil, Epsom Salts, Quinine and other early-day remedies.
Born in Cassville, Wisconsin in 1866 Lottie Raisch was the daughter of John and Eliza Ann Raisch, and when she was four years old moved with her family to Decatur, Nebraska. She attended country school and as a young woman was employed in the Indian school at the Omaha agency in Nebraska.
A White River resident for many years, Mrs. V. R. Branson, was a niece of Lottie Raisch's. Florence boarded with her aunt in Norris the first four years she taught school in Mellette county and sometimes served as her ambulance driver.
William Jordan of Mission remembers Miss Raisch well, and recalls the time he and his wife called at her home and during dinner were fed her excellent home baked bread.
