NANNIE SCALES , 71 widow of Peter Scales who died 3 years ago, died Tuesday at 6:30 m.m. at her home on the Hall Mill road following a lingering illness. Mrs. Scales was a member of the Methodist Church South at Pleasant Valley, joining the Church in early life and live a consecrated Christian life. She is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Buford Clifford, Mrs. Jerbert Dunn, Mrs. Charlie Pressgrove, a step son, Frank Scales, two step daughters, Mrs. Erwin Crowell and Mrs. Philey Crowell, one brother W. J. Smith, 2 sisters, Mrs. Joe Crick and Mrs. Will Hill and 22 grand children. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Crowell Chapel conducted by Rev. E.H. Stout. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Theresa Lynn (Alsup) SCALES ,age 44, died February 4, 2002. She is survived by her husband Clyde Scales; daughters, Faith (Tomaki) Moore, Charity Scales; mother, Ernestine (the Rev. B. T.) Johnson, father, Wardell (Juanita) Alsup, Sr.; grandson, Isaiah Moore; grandmother, Priscilla Brown; sisters, Florestine Elder, Paula (William) Berry; brothers, Clinton (Roxanne) Brown, Wardell (Linda) Alsup, Jr., Santoria (Tracy) Alsup and Linford Cordell Alsup. Family visitation is Sunday, February 10, 2002 at Smithfork Tabernacle, at 6 p.m. followed by the funeral at 7 p.m. Officiant, Rev. Keith Avent; Eulogist, Rev. Johnny Reid. Interment Monday, February 11, 2002 at Holden Cemetery, Shelbyville, TN. at 11 a.m.

D.P. SHAPARD - The sudden death of Dennie P. Shapard Friday afternoon at a Nashville hospital created wide spread sorrow here. A member of a prominent family, the son of the late Henry Shapard and Mrs. Cassie Streeter Shapard, he had spent most of his life in Shelbyville where he enjoyed a wide friendship. He had served two terms as Circuit Court Clerk of Bedford County, and under the Horton administration, he held a position under the comptroller. Dennie Shapard was a generous, kind hearted man, loyal and devoted to his family and friends, his sudden passing in the prime of life brings sorrow to a large circle. Funeral services were held at the residence Saturday at five o'clock, conducted by his pastor, Rev. J.T. Parsons. The interment was in Willow Mount cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Eliza McDonald Shapard; three daughters, Misses Clara Streeter, Anne and Katherine Shapard; four brothers, Lewis, Charlie, Frank, and Edwin Shapard, and a sister, Mrs Tom Hix.

FRANK BUTLER SHAPARD , 56, formerly of Shelbyville, died unexpectedly at 8:30 P.M. Sunday at his home in Nashville. Mr. Shapard, native of Shelbyville, and member of a prominent pioneer family of this section, was pharmacist for one of the Warner Drug Stores in Nashville. He moved from Shelbyville to Lebanon two years ago and to Nashville from Lebanon last year. He was for many years a druggist here associated with his father , Henry Shapard and after his fathers death continued the business with his late brother, Charlie Shapard, for some time. Shapard's Drug Store here was established by his father. Mr Shapard was a man of many estimable traits of character and had many friends who regret his untimely passing. He was a member of the Methodist Church and a member of the Board of Stewards of the Church here until he moved away. In addition to his wife Mrs. Cret Jean Shapard, he is survived by a son Cop. Edward T. Shapard U.S. Army, stationed at Fresno, California; a daughter, Mrs. Howard Mayo of Danville, Virginia; two brothers Lewis and Edwin Shapard of Shelbyville; a sister, Mrs. Sue Hix of Shelbyville and one grandchild. Funeral services were held at the Thompson Funeral Home Wednesday at 2 P.M. by Rev N.B. Tucker and Rev. Fred Woodard of Nashville. Burial was in Willow Mount Cemetery here.

R.P. SHAPARD - Prominent Man of Griffin, GA., and Prominently Connected Here Dies Friday Morning R.P. Shapard, president of the Spaulding Knitting Mills, at Griffin, Ga., was found in his office Friday morning, shot through the head and died a few hours later. Mr. Shapard was alone in his office when a number of the employees of the mill heard the shot and rushed in to find him wounded and a pistol lying on the floor beside him. He had been in ill health for some time. He was a former citizen of Shelbyville, the eldest son of Mrs Evander Shapard and the late Evander Sharpard, Sr. He was reared here and his death is source of wide regret. He had been living in Griffin Ga., for some time and had invented and patented machinery for the manufacture of children hose, and was considered one of the wealthiest men in that part of Georgia. Mr. Shapard was a successful, useful citizen, a man of capacity and splendid public spirit. He is survived by his wife, his son Robert Jr. Two grandchildren, his mother Mrs. E. Shapard, five sisters, Mrs Eugenen Haynes of Douglas, Ga., Mrs Carl Douthitt of Santa Cruze Calif., Mrs. H.L. Dayton and Mrs. James L. Morton of this place and Mrs. Lawrence Polk of Chattanooga, and two brothers, Tom Shapard of Atlanta and Evander Shapard of Griffin.

IVIE W. SHARP - A telegram was received by Mrs. Everett White Friday of the death of her brother, Mr. Ivie W. Sharp in California. He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. W.E. Sharp, decreased, and worked for many years in Bedford and Moore Counties.

In 1902 he went to California with several other Bedford County boys, where he made a success financially, and in 1911 he came home and carried his mother and three younger children back with him. In the fall of 1912 he was married to Miss Fertile Arnold, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs. Burt Arnold of Goose Creek. One child was born of this union. And a short time afterward Mrs. Sharp died. In 1925 he was again married to Miss Nora McCarty who with the one child survives him. besides the following brothers and sisters; Mr. W.E. Sharp, Mrs. A.J. Martin, of Mulberry; Mrs. Clarence McNatt, of Shelbyville; Mrs. B.N. Helton of Petersburg; Mrs. G.N. Gilliland of Martinez, Calif; Mrs. Everett E. White of Tracy Calif; Mrs. J.T. Sharp of Readley, Calif.

AMERICA (ZELL) SMITH was born January 1, 1942 to the late Clyde & Mable Smith. She left this life on May 7, 2007 at Meharry Medical Hospital in Nashville at the young age of 65. She was a graduate of the Bedford County Training School and formerly worked for Tyson Foods & the Empire Pencil Co. Ms. America was preceded in death by three brothers, Vernon, Wilbert & Roy Clyde Smith; and one sister, Frances Smith. Ms. Zell leaves to cherish sweet memories: son, Ernest Ray "Steph" Smith of Shelbyville; sisters, Jo Ann Smith & Joyce Smith, both of Shelbyville; brothers, Mitchell Smith & Lloyd Smith, both of Shelbyville, Samuel (Emma) Smith of Gary, IN, Willie (Ruby) Smith of Chicago, IL & Jimmie Smith of Jacksonville, NC.
EARL S. SMITH , 71, of Shelbyville died this morning at Bedford County General hospital after a brief illness. He was the husband of Elvera L. Smith. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Hillcrest Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Saturday from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Hillcrest Funeral home. Some details are still incomplete and will be announced by Hillcrest Funeral home.

JAMES NIEL SHARP , passed away at 1:30 at the home of his daughter Mrs. James Norton in Summit Township. James Niel Sharp was born in Bedford County, Tennessee, November 27, 1860, the son of Graham Butcher and Almeda Dunaway Sharp. He attended the public school of Flat Creek, Tennessee, and attended college and law school at Shelbyville. He moved to Missouri with he parents in 1883, and settled on a farm near Appleton City. November 26, 1885, he was united in marriage with Miss Katie Lou Clark, and to this union three daughters were born, Dixie B. Sexton, now residing in Walteria, California, Prue K. Bowman, Canango Park, California, and Mary G. Norton, Butler Missouri. In 1895 he moved to a farm near Passaic where he made his home until his death. His wife preceded him in death a number of years ago. During the last few months of his critical illness he received tender care in the home of his daughter, Mrs. Norton. Funeral services were held at the Culver Chapel, Saturday afternoon, April 30, 1938, conducted by Rev. Chas. R. Swofford of the Methodist Church assisted by Carl J. Henry. Burial was made in Oak Hill Cemetery. "Colonel" Sharp, as he was called by all who were his friends, and they were many, was a man who liked folks, and nature. He saw beauty in all forms of life, and his appreciation of beauty found expression in beautiful language, with which he was gifted. He spoke the language of the poets, and shared in their dreams. He saw something back beyond the tangible things of life that must have inspired him with a faith that comes to men who have caught the secret of life. A philosopher, he was continually asking "why?', and was known as a good story teller. Many of his articles were published in the press. He served Bates County as representative in the lower house of the general assembly during two terms, 1915 and 1917.

MRS. JOHN STALLINGS , well known and highly respected citizen, died Sunday, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Joe Palmer, on the Unionville pike. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock at Bedford. Rev. Claude Lewis officiating. Mrs. Stallings was a member of the Baptist church. She is survived by eight children and a number of grandchildren (not named)

MR. and MRS. JOHN STANLEY STALLINGS - Mrs. J. S. Stallings died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. G.W. Oneal Saturday morning at 9:30 and her husband, John Stanley Stallins died Sunday morning. Both had been ill for a short time. A double funeral was held Monday morning at 10:30 o'clock at the Big Springs Baptist church, with Rev. Burtis Christian of Wartrace and Rev. Claud Lewis in charge. Both were members of the Baptist church and enjoyed a wide friendship throughout the county. The burial was in the New Bethel cemetery. Their survivors are a son, John Stallings, two daughters, Mrs. G.W. Oneal and Mrs. Ross Pierce and eight grandchildren.

ROBERT WESTLEY STEM - Mrs. Zannie Lamb of Hickory Hill received word last week of the death of her brother, Robert Westley Stem of Houston, Texas. Mr Stem was born and reared in Bedford County, the son of the late John Edd and Mary Ann Smotherman Stem. He left this county when he was 25 years old (1890) and has resided in Texas since that time. Mr Stem had celebrated his 83rd birthday on Monday, September 13 and died at 4:20 a.m. the following day, after having enjoyed a birthday dinner given by one of his daughters on the previous evening, relative here relate. Surviving Mr. Stem are three sisters, Mrs. Zannie Lamb of Shelbyville, Mrs. Fannie Wheeler of Christiana, and Mrs. Dora Fisher of Nashville; three brothers, John H. Stem of Unionville, besides many nieces and nephews in this area.
