An Old Negro Seventy Years of Age Landed in Bradley County Jail, Where He Dies.

About fourteen years ago the grand jury brought in a presentment against an old colored man by the name of Joe Cook for allowing women of bad repute to board at his house. The circumstances were such; however, that no one demanded his arrest or prosecution. But the charge was still of record, and a few months ago, while the sheriff was hunting up "old played out" cases, he came across this one. A warrent was called for, the old negro arrested in McMinn county, tried and sentenced to jail for a short period in Bradley county.

He took sick and died in jail last Monday night, and his remains were sent to Riceville to his family.

This case, though one of the most frivolous, has cost Bradley county fully one hundred dollars. But them "the law must be vindicated" and officers must have their fees. Old Jo was seventy years of age.

Shame on such justice. How much longer are the people going to tolerate these outrages?
