Number Four School

 

The only school in Bradley County that had a number for a name.

The first record that can be found of the schools history is in a "Blue Back Speller" which belonged to the first teacher, Mr. M. J. S. (Marcus) Nichol. The following words are from the book: Abt. October 6, 1886. Classes began in the fall of 1886 and continued for 92 days. Since this date many teachers were in and out. Beginning with some of the older ones as following: Superintendents in the years of Number Four School:

ON June 22, 1985 a reunion was held at the Union Baptist Church recreation center for the students of Number Four School.

The reunion was organized by Mildred Fowler Blair with the help of the committee members.

The oldest and youngest student was recognized.

Maggie Ross McClure - 85 years old.
Irene Hawkins Regan - 39 years old.
Ethel Sandidge Willis, 97 did not attend.

Gaynelle and Gladys Humberd were presented with a plaque form the students which read:

School Board Meetings

December 31, 1920
The term of school was set for seven (7) months providing we were able to participate in the 5% tax levy for rural schools. Otherwise school term would be six (6) months.

January 2, 1922
The School Board decided that all 2 room school houses should be insured and that 1 room school houses would be as were for the Board to carry their own insurance.
