JOHN MEBANE

John Mebane of Carroll Co. TN was born in Orange Co. NC, son of William Brown Mebane and Frances Woods. John had two brothers who also went to Carroll Co.: William Mebane (1796-1881) who married Elizabeth Sheppard in Orange Co., and Morgan Mebane (1816-1908) who married Mary Jane Morrow in Orange Co. He had a sister who also went to Carroll Co.: Margaret Mebane (abt 1803-abt 1886) who married James Johnson, originally from Johnston Co. NC; their son William Johnson was written up in Goodspeed's History of Carroll Co.

The Orange Co. NC Marriage Bond for John Mebane and Julia Pickett (transcribed as John Mabene & Julin Dickett) was dated 12 Apr 1831, with John Hodge as bondsman. John and Julia had a total of nine children: William Elbridge, James L, Sidney Allen, George W, Elizabeth Frances (m1. William Adams, no children; m2. Hiram C Horton), Julia A, Mary B, John T and Alexander F. John and Julia and some of their children were buried in the family cemetery; see listing at reference given above.

William Brown Mebane was the only son of William Mebane, the oldest son of Alexander Mebane Sr., who was the first High Sheriff of Orange Co. NC when the county was formed in 1752.
