COUNTY TENNESSEE
Zachariah George had served in the Union Army in Tn during the Civil War. He loved the country so well that after the war he and his bride came from OH to Tn and bought the Dr. Curtis property in Macedonia Community, Carroll County. It was in the home of Zachariah & Margaret George that Ethel was reared from age 10. Mr. & Mrs. George had no children of their own.
Lonnie's father d. when he was 15 and he lived with his mother. When Lonnie and Ethel decided to marry consent was given by Mr. & Mrs. George provided they care for them the rest of their lives and their property would be willed to them. This was done and the property where Margaret Mebane now resides is a part of this estate.
Lonnie and Ethel Sparks spent their entire life in the Macedonia Community, 9th Civil District, Carroll County. They had great interest in community and church life and were members of Shiloh Cumberland Presbyterian Church. It was through his desire and untiring efforts that Shiloh Cemetery was well kept and not allowed to grow up. When failing health kept him from doing this, a group saw fit to form an endowment fund for perpetual care of the Cemetery and it is through this fund the Cemetery is cared for today.
Lonnie and Ethel Sparks were the parents of 3 children. They are: 1. George William Sparks b. 12-15-1906 (m. Sue Owen 6-20-1928) d. 3-31-1964.
They have, daughter, Rachel (m. Lamon Kilzer-Divorced): granddaughter, Jeanne Kilzer: greatgrandson Joshua Kilzer. George was a minister in The Cumberland Presbyterian Church for over 40 years, serving churches in TN and KY. The family resides in Somerset, Ky., where Rachel teaches school.
2. Sarah Margaret Sparks b. 11-25-1917 (m. Virgel Mebane 12-24-1940). Virgel d. 11-27-1978. They have 3 children; daughter, Sarah (m. Jimmie Brown); granddaughter Marcia Brown (m. Tracy Webb); grandson Allen Brown. Daughter, Martha Sue (m. Dave Peters); granddaughters Amy and Kelli Peters. Son, Glynn (m. Marian Dublin); granddaughter Kaci Mebane. This family all live near McKenzie. Margaret is a retired teacher and the children and grandchildren are engaged in teaching, selling insurance and other business.
3. Arthur Lonnie Sparks b. 12-16-1919 (m. Nelle Luckey 8-24-1947). They have 2 children. Daughter, Cynthia; Son, Arthur L. (Jr.) "Art" (m. Tammy Kaler); granddaughters Virginia Elizabeth "Jeni Beth" and Emily Anne Sparks. Arthur and Nelle are retired teachers living in Martin. Cynthia is Business Manager, Dyersburg State Community College, Dyersburg. Art lives in Union City, is a partner in a CPA firm (Thompson, Breeding, Dunn, Creswell, and Sparks) with main office in Union City and offices in Paris and McKenzie.
