COUNTY TENNESSEE
Gideon Spellings, Sr. was b. 11-15-1805 in Edgecomb County, NC. He was the son of Britton Spellings and Lavinia Pippin Spellings, the grandson of Frederick Spellings and the great grandson of Timothy Spellings all of NC. Timothy came to N.C. with an English land grant. He and his first wife, Nancy Crisp Spellings, moved from NC to Wilson Co., TN during the 1820's. During the 1840's they moved to Carroll Co., TN where he was a property owner in the 15th and 18th Districts. In the late 1850's, he was divorced. He m. Malvina Pinkston Aden and moved to the 4th District of Benton County, TN on Cotton Creek Road - about 3/4 mile east of the Carroll-Benton County line. While a Benton County farmer, he was elected to two terms of the 4th District County Court. After the 1874 death of his wife Malvina, he m. Latisha Malinda Garrett in 1875. On 7-4-1879, he died of "heart dropsy" at his Cotton Creek Road home. His grave is located about 300 feet east of his homesite. Mr. Ralph Cole, Gideon Spellings' great great nephew, located, repaired, and reset his grave marker.
Gideon Spellings and his first wife, Nancy, had ten children: James Marshall (b. 1828 - d. ?) m. Adaline Butler; Martha (b. 1831 - d. 1912) m. William P. Chambers (b. 1835 - d. 1872); Lavania (b. 1838 - d.?);l John (b. 1840 -d. 1908, buried Spellings Cemetery); Rebecca (b. 1842 - d.?); Frances (b. 1845 - d.); William (b. 1847 - d.?); Elizabeth (b. 1848 d.?); and Thomas (b. ? - d.?)
Gideon and his second wife, Malvania. had two children: Gideon C. Jr. (b. 1859 . ^ 1933, buried Butler Cemetery), and Harriett A Buell (b. 1861 - d.?). Gideon Jr. M. Louise Bowers. They had ten children: Herman Halbut, Cliborn, Haskell, Clifton, Clarence Elam, Dewey, Lula and Henry.
Gideon Spellings m. to his third wife Latisha, produced three daughters: Indiana "Annie" (b. 1875 - d. 1945), Missouri, "Zue" (b. 1877 - d.?), and Tennessee, "Tennie" (b 1879 - d.?). Annie m. J. Monroe Park (b L866 - d. 1941) in 1895. Nine children resulted from this marriage: Sam F. (b. 1896
d. 1954), Leola (b. 1898 - d. 1977), Joe L~ (b. 1899 - d. 1961), John E. (b. 1901 - d' 1964), Earl W. (b. 1904 - d. 1914), Audrey m' "Bill" (b. 1908, lives in Huntingdon) Minelle, "Nell" (b. 1910, lives in Bruceton)i Kenneth W. (b. 1913, lives in Bruceton) Grace (b. 1916 - d. 1959). J. Monroe and Annie Park are buried in the Hollow Rock Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
Missouri (Zue) m. a Mr. Ellis. They had three sons and two daughters. Zue is buired at Memphis, TN. Tennessee (Tennie) m. a Mr. Perkins. She is buried at Memphis.
Gideon Spellings, Sr. had numerous other descendants concentrated in West Tennessee and in surrounding states.
