Family of Millie (Hamilton) and Baker S. Thomas

Mary S. Hamilton (b 12-22-1856, d 1-9-1946 Carroll Co. TN, daughter of Martha (Carroll) and James R.B. Hamilton, m. 1-10-1878 Baker Thomas (b. 10-30-1853, d. 2-28-1930), Carroll Co. Tn. the son of Elrita (Sparks) and Elzie Ezkiel Thomas). They built a home (5-1-1852, which still is occupied) in the Hico Community (Carroll Co. Tn), where they farmed and reared their family.

Baker Thomas was a member of the school board and outstanding member of his community. His grandparents were early settlers in the area. The land on which he lived earlier belonged to his paternal grandfather, Luke Thomas, who settled there about 1823. (Luke was b., Bertie Co., NC, and moved to Carroll Co. from Trigg Co. KY). Molly (Hamilton) Thomas was also great-granddaughter and granddaughter of early settlers. Her great grandfather (James Hamilton) served as a Minuteman, NC in the Revolution, and constructed one of the first defenses against Indians in TN (Hamilton Station. Sumner Co. TN). Thomas Hamilton (her grandfather) served under A. Jackson in War of 1812, Battle of New Orleans; and was ruling elder of Shiloh Cumberland Presbyterian Church for sixty-eight years. (All are buried in the Shiloh Cemetery near McKenzie, TN).

Baker and Molly were parents of Clarence B. Thomas (b. 2-7-1885, m. Lola Turtin, 1-2-1917, d. 7-1975, Carroll Co. TN), Lizzie Thomas (Elizabeth Lera) b. 11-24-1890, m. Andrew Bernard Kemp, 12-13-1911, d. 4-11-1943, Carroll Co. TN); and Hulon Baker Thomas (b. 8-13-1893, m. Mary Moore, 7-23-1919, d. 3-30-1958).

Clarence reared his family and lived in McKenzie, TN, where he owned and ran a hardware business until his retirement in the 1950's. His children are C. Merril Thomas (b. 9-28-1919, m. Iva Belle Pickins, 6-12-1944, they are parents of two daughters; Linda Gail and Nancy Ellen); and Mildred Elizabeth (b. 7-27-1920, mist, William A. Weaverin 1947, who d. in early 1950's, by whom she has a daughter, Patricia Ann; 2nd she m. Michael R. Raub, by whom she has a daughter, Susan Carol). Both Merril and Mildred attended Bethel College, and Univeristy of TN, Knoxville; and both now live in the New London, Ct. area. Merrill Thomas served in WW II, and commissioned a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy. He is now retired as an engineer from Electric Boat, Inc.

Lizzie Thomas, husband, Andy Kemp were farmers in the Cherrywoods Community (near McKenzie, TN). They had a dairy, and farmed until their death. Their children are Ruth Thomas (Kemp) Greener (m. 1st Howard Douglas, 2nd, Joe Greener). The Greeners live at the homeplace of her parents and farm.

Ruth worked for Wilker Bros. Mfg., McKenzie, TN, thirty-five years, and is now employed with Wen-Sue Mfg. Co., McKenzie, TN) and James Andrew Kemp (m. Cynthia Jo Billingsley, 10-22-1978, Henry, TN) has lived and farmed the place that was his grandfather (Baker Thomas') since 1953. He raises beef cattle, and also has a dairy.

Hulon Baker Thomas (youngest of Baker and Mollie Thomas' children) lived at his parents home until his death. He was a farmer and outstanding civic leader in his community. He and his wife had no children. His wife, Mary, was a descendant of the NC Duke family on her father's side of the house. Her father was Vaughn Moore.

Baker Thomas' siblings were Matt( b. 9-8-1885 m. Nettie Moore, aunt of Hulon B. Thomas' wife 11-5-1890. Their children were Lockie-Mrs. Bernard Vick, and Kate), and Elzie Ezekiel Thomas (who m. Ethel W. Hamilton, 12-23-1894, sister of Baker's wife, Mollie). Elzie and Ethel were parents of Ruby L. (Mrs. Max Ridley) and Robert Thomas (m. Buton Rowland). Lockie and Kate have no children. Robert and Ruby both were parents.
