GEORGE THOMASON

The Thomasons came to Carroll County in the early 1800's. George Albert Thomason, b. in 1876 was a farmer and optometrist in the Westport community. In 1900 he m. Emma, b. in 1880, the daughter of Alphus and Arhanda Boyd Butler. Their children were , Floyd and Clarice. They were members of New Hope Baptist Church. Albert d. in 1945, Emma in 1969.

Lyle, who attended Union University, m. Gerthal Wilson of Big Sandy. Their daughter Jane, who attended Vanderbilt University lives in AL where her three sons John, Lyle and Andrew were born.

Floyd, b. in 1906, m. Velma, b. 1912, daughter of William Levy and Ethel Roberts Bolen of Yuma. Both Floyd and Velma attended Clarksburg High School and Bethel College. Floyd taught school in Carroll County and was a rural mail carrier for 43 years. He was a deacon in Westport Baptist Church served as Superintendent of Sunday School for many years. He served on the Carroll County Library Board from 1954 to 1967. He d. in 1974. Velma taught in elementary schools at Westport and Clarksburg for 20 years. Their daughter, Elizabeth, b. in 1941, attended Bethel College. She has three sons Richard, Gregory and James.

Clarice Thomason, b. in 1914, attended Union University. She taught in elementary and high schools in Carroll County. Always active in Baptist church work, she was Baptist Student Union Director at the University of TN -Martin Branch. She died in an automobile accident during a trip to Ridgecrest Baptist Assembly in NC. Submitted by Velma Thomason
