The capital of Carroll County situated on Beaver creek a tributary of Obion River and at the junction of the Nashville and North-Western and the Mississippi Central and Tennessee Railroads, 106 miles west from Nashville, with which it is connected by stage line, and 185 miles northeast from Memphis. It is also connected by stage lines, and distant 40 miles from Jackson, 81 from Trenton and 75 from Mayfield Kentucky. The neighborhood is one of the finest agricultural regions of the AState, beautifully diversified, with a rich deep soil, and well watered. It was incorporated in 1824, and contains a court house and other county buildings, one Old School and one Cumberland Presbyterian church, one Masonic Female Institute, one male and one female academy, one Masonic lodge and chapter, one Lodge I.O.O.F., one weekly newspaper - the Carroll "Patriot", published by A.W. Hawkins, issued on Thursday, six general stores, several flouring and saw mills, three hotels, one tobacco manufacturer, two cotton dealers, with numberous and varied mechanical trades and professions.
