JESSICA ELAINE COFFMAN - A two-vehicle wreck Oct. 18 has claimed the life of a rt. 1, Lavinia teenager. Jessica E. Coffman, 18, became Carroll County's seventh traffic victim this year when she was killed instantly about 1 a.m. in a head on collision on State Highway 104, approximately 19 miles west of Huntingdon. Charlie Kethal Hames, 17, of Cedar Grove, driver of the other vehicle involved, is listed in critical condition at Elvis Presley Burn Center in Memphis after being airlifted from the scene by Helicopter Air-Evac 7. According to a report filed by Trooper Marty Pollock, a red 1995 Pontiac Sunbird, driven by Ms. Coffman, was westbound and Hames, driving a 1991 GMC pickup, was eastbound when the two vehicles met at the crest of a hill where the grinding crash occurred. Hames was able to crawl away from his burning truck that caught on fire on impact, the trooper said. The wreck is still under investigation, according to Pollock. McKenzie's Fire Rescue team worked apprximately an hour to free Ms. Coffman's body from the wreckage of her vehicle. Hames, who is a senior at West Carroll High School, suffered second and third degree burns over 40 percent of his body. A family spokesman contacted at the Burn Center Tuesday morning disclosed that the injured teenager remains in critical, but stabilizing condition. "He responds to the doctor's commands." said the family member. Besides the burns, his left leg is broken in five places and his right leg is also fractured. His kidney and lungs are also bruised. At West Carroll High School where Hames is a senior, Principal Janie Evans, said Tuesday that the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, led by president Doug Oliver, was conducting special prayer for him. The principal said she talks with his mother frequently by phone and gives students an update on his condition every two hours. "The students are very concerned about his progress," she said. They have collected funds to send to him and have bought him fruit baskets t o send to his parents. Students will also send flowers for the funeral of Ms. Coffman, who was a 1998 graduate of West Carroll High School. When the accident occurred, she was only about a mile away from her home where she lived with her parents, Donnie and Cathy Coffman.
