THOMAS FAMILY

John Thomas sailed from England, 6-2-1609, on "Sea Venture," the flag ship of a small fleet. During a storm, the ship lost sight of the fleet and 3 days later, landed at Bermuda where food was abundant. Construction of two boats began. They sailed 5-10-1610 arriving in VA on 24th.

John and Dorothy Thomas of Wales had 4 sons in Jamestown where Pocohontas was a frequent visitor. John worked to redeem his headright in order to patent land by 10-7-1649.

John Jr. had 6 children, including Richard (m. Elizabeth Marshall), parent of John who m. Mary Lawrence who bore 7 children including Joseph, who settled in Bertie Co., NC in 1729. He m. Alice Spivy who bore 8 children, including James who m. Sarah Barnes in 1741. James II, one of their 7 children (b. 1762) m. Mary Standly and had 7 children. He fought in the Revolutionary War. They moved 650 miles to Donaldson Creek in Christian Co., KY where many descendants live today.

Ezekial, brother of James II had 4 children including Luke and Ezekial Jr. Ezekial Jr. m. 1st cousin Temperance, daughter of James II. Their daughter was Clara. His 2nd wife Abrilla P. Hornsy bore 9 children, most at Hico. Ezekial d. in 1850. Today Ted Coleman is one of his few descendants.

Luke and Ezekial helped establish schools and churches in KY before receiving land grants in Hico, Tn around 1824. They helped establish Shiloh C. P. Church and Old Hannah School in Carroll Co., acquired much land, were active in the first court, and gave land for the first railroad. Direct descendants of Luke still hold his land.

Luke m. Elizabeth Burradell. Calvin Pinkney, b. 1815, one of their 13 children, m. Elizabeth Hallem in 1840 (daughters Caroline and Betty). He also m. Susan Hornsboro (sons Tom, Bee, Billy, Nath, Charlie, and John). Pinkney divided his land between his 8 children, part which has been passed to great­grandchildren today. Charlie, his youngest son, remained on the homeplace, and raised his children, Cathilene and Fred, with wife Ida Broach. Cathilene m. Ben Surber, and bore children, Charlyne and Ben Thomas (children: Tommy and Natalie) Surber. Fred lived in the old home place with wife Victorine Crawford, who bore a daughter, Jane (children {Catherine, Vickie, and Tommy Chandler); and had a daughter Nancy (daughter, Susan Barksdale) by his second wife Williedeen Rowland. The Pinkney Thomas home stands today in the Hico community having housed five generations. Today Williedeen Thomas Kemp resides there. Submitted b\- Jane Thomas Chandler
