DR. JAMES MITCHUM ARNOLD
, son of the late Willis N. and Margaret (Garrett) Arnold, was born in Henderson County July 27, 1849, and died in his home in Lexington July 30, 1930. His early days were spent on the farm and his first public work was teaching school in the county. In 1887 he graduated in medicine and began the practice in his parental home in the old 5th district but some 32 years ago he came to Lexington and was here active until about seven years ago when he retired. On December 14, 1882 he was married to Lucy McCollum and of the 9 children born to the union, the following survive with their mother; Murray, Medina druggist; Lyman, Lexington; Loy (Mrs. I.M. Dennison) Lexington and Miss Margie unmarried. Elta married James Nuckolls and died several years ago, leaving her husband and one son, James, who had lived in the home of his grandparents practically all his life. Dr. Arnold was a member of the Baptist Church and the last tribute to his memory in the service was held in his home and conducted by his pastor, Rev. Fleetwood Ball, after which the body was carried to Unity Cemetery near the old Arnold home.
EMILY ETHEL AUSTIN
- Services for Mrs. Emily Ethel Austin were Thursday, Sept. 3 at Lawrence Sorensen Funeral Home with burial in Pisgah Cemetery in Chester County. Mrs. Austin, who was 82, died Monday at Jackson General Hospital after a long illness. She was the widow of George Hubert Austin. She leaves three daughters, Mrs. Jeanette Flatt of Lexington, Mrs. Mary Ann Webb of Fort Worth, Texas and Mrs. Mattie L. Sanders of Jackson; a son Frank Austin of Jackson; two sisters, Mrs. Pauline Brown and Mrs. Campbell, both of Jackson, 21 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandson.
J. W. "Pete" AUSTIN
, age 69, died at his home near Finger Saturday night December 29, 2001 of Cancer. Mr. Austin was born and reared in McNairy County, near Finger the son of the late Gilbert Paul and Elsie Barham Austin. He attended schools in McNairy County and in 1953 entered the U.S. Army and served state side til 1955. In 1955 he was married to Mary Travis of Henderson and they made their home in Joliet Illinois. Mr. Austin morked as a welder for Buick, Olds, Cadillac Manufacturing Company in Willow Springs Illinois. He was very active in the U.A.W. He retired in 1985 and they moved back to Finger.
He is survived by his wife Mary Travis Austin of Finger and a stepdaughter Frances Marie Gilliard of Joliet IL and two sisters, Jean Dunaway of Lexington and Shirley Burkhead of Henderson. He has two step-grandchildren Lisa Simpson and Scott Tidwell and two step-great grandsons Andrew and Kevin Simpson all of Joliet IL. Funeral services will be 1 pm Tuesday January 1, 2002 from the Chapel of Casey Funeral Home with Bro. John Heitz officiating and burial will follow in the Henderson City Cemetery.
JOY (HOPPER) AUSTIN
- Services for Mrs. Joy Hopper Austin were Thursday at Pafford Funeral Home with burial in Smith Cemetery in Chester County. Mrs. Austin, who was 48, died Tuesday at Regional Medical Center in Memphis. She was formerly of Lexington. She leaves two daughters, Mrs. Jean Ann Sims of Big Sandy and Miss Lisa Carol Austin of Memphis; two sons, Tony Austin of Lexington and Stephen Austin of Memphis; four sisters, Mrs. Edna Brown of Sardis, Mrs. Gail Hamm of Reagan, Mrs. Connie Hayes of Herando Beach, FL and Mrs. Bonnie Blankenship of Paris; a brother, Scottie Hopper of Lexington and two grandchildren.
Rita Lee (Vickery) AUSTIN
- Services for Mrs. Rita Lee Vickery Austin were Saturday, April 17, at Casey Funeral Home, Henderson. Burial was in Chester County Memory Gardens. Mrs. Austin, 34, died Wednesday April 14, 1999 in an auto accident. She was an employee of Young Radiator. She leaves two daugthers, Heather Lachelle Barnes and Judy Jean Farley, both of Lexington; her mother, Anna Helen Wilkerson Vickery of Henderson; her father, Bayles Neal Vickery of Macon Ga.; a brother Larry Jennings of Crofton KY; four sisters, Debra Spears of Crofton KY; Kathy Ross of Jackson, Vickie Carpenter and Connie Nash both of Henderson; her grandmother, Mrs. Agnes Williamson of Dawson Springs, KY.
