The first brick mansion in Nashville, Tennessee, was built by General
James Robertson for his wife, Charlotte Robertson, whose story is told
in the July Delineator. It is easily to been seen from this tale of
daring and suffering, how heroic a part was played by women in the
settlement of America; not only in enduring the loss of everything
commonly supposed to be necessary to their lives, but in the actual use
of arms, and in the duty, often necessary to their lives, but in the
actual use of arms, and in the duty, often necessary in the absence of
their husbands, of defending a home or a fort against savages or wild
beasts. Mrs. Robertson lived to see more peaceful times and to enjoy
well-earned honor and ease. She and her husband lie side by side in the
old City Cemetery at Nashville.
